Sydney Olympic Park is set to host the first Sydney derby at ANZ stadium with the possibility of a bumper crowd with the ground's extended capacity.
It was originally reported that Sydney FC and Western Sydney Wanderers would open the 2016/17 season with a blockbuster Sydney derby in round one, but ANZ Stadium management later backtracked and said simply that “following consultation with the FFA”, there would be a Sydney derby at some unspecificed point in October.
Stadium Australia Operations Managing Director, Mr Daryl Kerry was pleased with the outcome and that they could work in tandem with a premier club such as Western Sydney Wanderers
“In just four seasons, the Western Sydney Wanderers have established themselves as one of Australia's outstanding sporting clubs.
“We look forward to welcoming the Wanderers and their passionate supporters to Sydney’s Olympic stadium. In particular, we’re excited to be hosting our first Sydney Derby in October and giving everybody in Greater Sydney the opportunity to experience this magnificent event.
“There is no doubt the Sydney Derby – played in the city’s major events stadium – has the potential to build into one of the world’s great football contests.”
Football Federation Australia is still finalising the fixture list at this point for next season and as such the fixture is yet to be confirmed by the governing body.comments
