Aussies Abroad Weekend Wrap

SEVERAL fringe Socceroos played starring roles for their club sides to give new coach Ange Postecoglou food for thought ahead of his first squad selection this week.

Scott McDonald continued his strong form and Dario Vidosic impressed in Switzerland, while Tim Cahill’s superb season continued. Elsewhere, James Holland saw red, Tommy Oar returned from injury and youngster Massimo Luongo continued his impressive season with a brace in England’s third tier.

In the English Premier League, Mile Jedinak played a full game in midfield as Crystal Palace lost 2-0 to West Bromwich Albion. Jedinak went close to scoring just after the hour mark but his header from Jerome Thomas’ cross flew just wide of the target.

Mark Schwarzer was an unused substitute as Chelsea suffered a shock 2-0 loss to Newcastle United.

Elsewhere, Brad Jones was an unused substitute as Liverpool lost 2-0 to Arsenal, while Chris Herd was an unused substitute as Aston Villa played out a 0-0 draw with West Ham United.

In the English Championship, Scott McDonald found the back of the net for Millwall in their 2-2 draw with league leaders Burnley. McDonald was set up by Paul Robinson who brought down Nicky Bailey’s free-kick, with McDonald’s sweet volley beating Tom Heaton in the Burnley goal. Shane Lowry started on the bench but was introduced after just 7 minutes following an injury to Scott Malone. Lowry was unfortunate to gift Burnley a goal on 59 minutes after deflecting Michael Kightly’s cross into his own net. Alex Cisak was an unused substitute for Burnley in the clash.

Rhys Williams played a full game at right-back as Middlesbrough lost 1-0 to Blackburn Rovers.

Elsewhere, Adam Federici was an unused substitute as Reading copped a 5-2 thumping from the previously winless Sheffield Wednesday.

In the League One, Massimo Luongo starred with a brace for Swindon Town in their 5-2 win over Port Vale. Luongo put his side 3-1 up just before the hour mark with ferocious curling shot after some excellent hold up play from Nathan Thompson. Luongo then doubled his tally in second half stoppage time with a neat strike from a tight angle.

Bailey Wright played a full game in defence as Preston North End drew 1-1 with Tranmere Rovers.

James Meredith played a full game at left-back as Bradford City drew 0-0 with Crewe Alexandra. Bradden Inman was a 75th minute substitute in the clash and added potency to the Crewe attack with a curling effort just missing the target from outside of the box.

Elsewhere, James Wesolowski started and played 87 minutes as Oldham Athletic drew 1-1 with Bristol City. Neil Kilkennywas absent from the Bristol City match-day squad.

In League Two, Aaron Downes scored for Torquay United in their 3-1 win over Bury FC. Downes marked his return from injury with a powerful header from Kevin Nicholson’s corner.

Ryan Williams started and played 59 minutes as Oxford United lost 1-0 to Bristol Rovers.

Elsewhere, Shane Cansdell-Sherriff was sent off as Burton Albion lost 1-0 to Morecambe. Cansdell-Sherriff was shown a second yellow card in second half stoppage time for a foul on Kevin Ellison. Meanwhile, Ben McNamara was an unused substitute as Northampton Town lost 1-0 to Plymouth Argyle.

In Scotland, Jackson Irvine played a full game as Kilmarnock lost 2-1 to Inverness.

Dylan McGowan returned to the Hearts starting line-up, playing a full game in defence in their 2-0 loss to St Johnstone.

Elsewhere, Tom Rogic was an unused substitute as Celtic drew 1-1 with Dundee United.

In the German Bundesliga, Robbie Kruse started and played 62 minutes as Bayer Leverkusen suffered a shock 1-0 loss to bottom side Eintracht Braunschweig. Kruse was busy throughout the first half and should have put his side ahead but his effort from close range lacked conviction and couldn’t beat Braunschweig ‘keeper Daniel Davari.

Mitch Langerak was an unused substitute as Borussia Dortmund hammered VfB Stuttgart 6-1.

In the German Second Division, Mathew Leckie played a full game as FSV Frankfurt lost 2-0 to SV Sandhausen. Nikita Rukavystya made his starting debut for Frankfurt and played the full 90 minutes in an attacking midfield role and linked well with Leckie in the second half but the former Perth Glory speedster saw his effort miss the target.

Ben Halloran was absent from the match-day squad as Fortuna Dusseldorf lost 1-0 to VfR Aalen.

In the German Third Division, Mustafa Amini started and played 78 minutes as Borussia Dortmund II lost 1-0 to RB Leipzig.

In the Dutch Eredivisie, Tommy Oar returned from injury, starting and playing 59 minutes as FC Utrecht beat SC Heerenveen 2-0. Adam Sarota remained out with a knee injury.

Eli Babalj was absent with a groin problem as AZ Alkmaar beat ADO Den Haag 2-0. 

Jason Davidson started for Heracles but their clash was eventually cancelled due to extreme weather conditions.

In the Dutch Second Division, Travis Cooper was a 72nd minute substitute as VVV Venlo lost 2-0 to Jong PSV.

Elsewhere, Andrew Marveggio was a 90th minute substitute as SC Telstar beat Willem II 3-1.

In the Italian Serie A, Carl Valeri remained out with an ankle injury as Sassuolo won their second game of the season with a thrilling 4-3 win over Sampdoria.

In Belgium, Mat Ryan kept a clean-sheet for Club Brugge in their 1-0 win over KSC Lokeren. Ryan made a decent save early in the contest from a long range effort but was largely quiet from then on.

In Switzerland, Dario Vidosic played a starring role for FC Sion in their 3-0 win over FC Luzern. Vidosic’s excellent set-piece delivery again proved fruitful for Sion with Ebenezer Assifuah-Inkoom bundling home a goal from a set piece after just 3 minutes. Vidosic then sealed the result on 80 minutes with a neat finish following some excellent work from Ovidiu Herea.Oliver Bozanic played 90 minutes for Luzern before being replaced in stoppage time.

In Austria, James Holland was sent off as Austria Wien returned to the winners list with a 3-0 win over Wiener Neustadt. Holland was unlucky to be shown red for a foul on Herbert Rauter on 51 minutes with replays showing contact was minimal.  

In Russia, Luke Wilkshire played a full game at right-back as Dinamo Moscow beat Tom Tomsk 1-0.

In the Turkish Second Division, Kerem Bulut was a 67th minute substitute as Karsiyaka lost 1-0 to Denizlispor.

In the Greek Super League, Apostolos Giannou found the back of the net for Panionios in their 3-2 loss to AEL Kalloni. Giannou opened the scoring on 13 minutes with a tidy finish from Markos Dounis’ cross. Giannou then set up Christos Aravidis in the second half, slipping the goal under the advancing goalkeeper, leaving a simple tap in for Aravidis.

Elsewhere, Dean Bouzanis was an unused substitute as Aris FC lost 2-0 to Creta.

In the Greek Second Division, Billy Konstantinidis scored a brace for Panserraikos in their 4-1 win over Iraklis.

In the Romanian Second Division, former Perth Glory and Central Coast Mariners striker Michael Baird found the back of the net for Universitatea Craiova in their 1-1 draw with UTA Arad.

In the American MLS, Tim Cahill starred for the New York Red Bulls with a goal and an assist in their 2-2 draw with Houston Dynamo in the first leg of their semi-final. Cahill opened the scoring on 22 minutes, ghosting in at the back post to head home Thierry Henry’s cross. Cahill then set up Eric Alexander just after the half hour mark to double his side’s lead.David Carney played a full game at left-back in the clash and was involved in Cahill’s opener before botching a clearance allowing Ricardo Clark to slot home Houston’s first goal on 51 minutes.

In South Korea, Luke Devere was a 68th minute substitute as Gyeongnam lost 2-1 to Seongnam.

Robert Cornthwaite was an 89th minute substitute as Chunnam Dragons lost 1-0 to Jeju United, who were without Adrian Madaschi.

In the Chinese Super League, Ryan McGowan played a full game in defence as Shandong Luneng ended their impressive season in style with a 5-1 hammering of Guizhou Renhe. Jonas Salley was absent from the Guizhou match-day squad.

Eddy Bosnar played a full game in defence as Guangzhou R&F beat Shanghai Shenhua 4-2. Rostyn Griffiths was absent from the Guangzhou match-day squad.

Erik Paartalu played a full game in midfield as Tianjin Teda lost 2-1 to Shanghai Shenxin. Paartalu played a role in Tianjin’s consolation goal on 89 minutes with his long throw-in being flicked on before finding Zhou Haibin who scored with a stunning bicycle kick. Michael Marrone played a full game for Shenxin.

Joel Griffiths was absent through suspension as Qingdao Jonoon were relegated following a 1-0 loss to Beijing Guoan. 

Elsewhere, Daniel Mullen was missing through suspension as Dalian Aerbin beat Hangzhou Greentown 1-0, while Bernie Ibini was an unused substitute as Shanghai SIPG played out a 0-0 draw with Jiangsu Sainty.

In the Chinese Second Division, Adam Hughes was absent from the match-day squad as Harbin Yiteng gained promotion to the Chinese Super League following a 5-2 win over Beijing 361 Degrees.

Elsewhere, Ryan Griffiths found the back of the net for Beijing Baxy in their 4-2 loss to Shenyang Shenbei.

In Qatar Stars League, Sasa Ognenovski plays a full game in defence as Umm Salal moved off the bottom of the table with a 0-0 draw against Khor SC.

Elsewhere, Mark Bresciano played a full game in midfield as Al Gharafa drew 1-1 with Al Sadd.

In Iran, Iain Fyfe played a full game in defence as Mes Kerman drew 1-1 with Damash Gilan.

In India, former Newcastle Jets striker Sean Rooney found the back of the net for Bengaluru as they drew 2-2 with Mumbai FC.
