Aussies Abroad weekend wrap

It was an average weekend for the Aussies playing overseas with some of the leagues still in the off-season but several players had their first start for their new clubs.

In the EPL Mile Jedinak played a full match again in Crystal Palace 1-0 win at home against Stoke. The win lifted Palace out of the relegation zone. Brad Jones was an unused substitute for Liverpool while Chris Herd was still absent for Aston Villa when both teams drew 2-2. Mark Schwarzer remained on the bench in Chelsea’s 3-1 win against Manchester United.

In the Championship Alex Cisak was on the bench when Burnley had a 1-1 draw with Sheffield Wednesday. Adam Federici shared his fate when Reading thrashed Bolton 7-1. Rhys Williams who is on the brink of joining EPL team Swansea had a full shift again when Middlesbrough recorded a 1-0 win against Charlton. Shane Lowry and Scott McDonald also played full matches in their 1-0 win against Ipswich which means three valuable points in their fight against relegation.

In League One all Aussies apart from the injured James Meredith (Bradford/broken foot) played full matches for their respective teams. Bailey Wright and Neil Kilkenny had a 1-1 draw against Coventry, Massimo Luongo’s Swindon lost 2-0 at Gillingham, Oldham Athletic with James Wesolowski also lost 1-0 at Port Vale and Bradden Inman’s Crewe Alexandra lost at home against Leyton Orient.

In League Two Shane Cansdell-Sherriff was still missing for Burton Albion (0-0 at Bury) due to a broken cheekbone while Ryan Williams played until stoppage time when Oxford United snatched a late win at Wycombe.

In Italy Carl Valeri was an unused substitute for Sassuolo Calcio again when his team lost 0-2 at home against Torino FC.

In Portugal Caleb Patterson-Sewell remained on the bench when Gil Vicente lost 0-1 away at Coimbra late in stoppage time.

In the Netherlands’ Eredivisie Jason Davidson played a full match when Heracles Almelo lost 3-1 at Twente. Tommy Oar played 75 minutes in Utrecht’s 2-5 loss at home against Feyenoord, while Adam Sarota remained on the bench.

In the Eerste Divisie Harry Ascroft (VVV-Venlo) and Andrew Marveggio (SC Telstar) were unused substitutes for their clubs.

In Belgium Mathew Ryan again had a full shift when Club Brugge drew 1-1 at Lierse.

In Greece Apostolos Giannou started for Panionios GSS in the Superleague and played until the 63rd minute when his team won 2-0 against PAOK. Dean Bouzanis was not in the match squad for Aris FC when his team drew 0-0 at home against Atromitos.

In the Greek Football League Giannis Simosis played until the 69th minute for his new club Anagennisi Karditsa when they recorded a massive 4-1 win at Kavala.

And … no surprise … Billy Konstantinidis scored the winner with a direct free-kick for Panserraikos in the Greek Football League 2 again when his team snatched the three points with a 1-0 at Orfeas Eleuftheroupoli.

In Cyprus Robert Stambolziev came on in the 70th minute but was not able to do a change to the result when AE Kouklion lost at home to Ermis Aradippou.

In Scotland Jackson Irvine, who had his loan extended for Kilmarnock, played a full match when his team drew 1-1 at Partick. Dylan McGowan left the pitch at half-time when Hearts drew 3-3 at St Johnstone.

In the United Arab Emirates Alex Brosque played a full match again when the encounter between Ajman and Al Ain remained scoreless. Brett Holman also played a full match for Al Ain in their 2-0 loss at Al Sha’ab.

In Hong Kong Andrew Barišić was hindered from taking part in South China’s 4-1 win at Citizen due to problems with food poisoning. Marko Jesic played a full match in Sun Pegasus’ loss at Kitchee.

In Vietnam Sam Gallagher played a full match for Hà Nội T&T. His team stays on top of the League after a 4-1 win at Hoàng Anh Gia Lai.

In Malaysia’s Super League all teams with Aussies had successful starts. Steven Pantelidis played a full match for Selangor – coached by Mehmet Duraković – in their 2-0 against PBDKT T-Team. Spase Dilevski did the same when ATM FA won with the same result agaist Sarawak. Brendan Gan (Kelantan FA) and Mario Karlović (Terengganu FA) were not in the match squad when their teams won by 2-1 against Sarawak and PKNS respectively.

In India’s Federation Cup Tolgay Özbey had a brilliant start for Dempo SC. In his first match he scored a brace and was susbstituted in the 64th minute, while Simon Colosimo played a full match for the team coached by Arthur Papas. Matthew Foschini was on the scoresheet for Salgoacar in their 2-1 win at Mumbai. Jerry Karpeh (2-1 for Sporting de Goa against East Bengal) and Sean Rooney (1-1 at Rangdajied) also played full matches. James Meyer (Pune FC) played until half-time when his team lost the match at Chirag United in the second half (0-1).

In New Zealand’s ASB Premiership Jamie de Abreu came on for Team Wellington in the 28th minute while Richard Cardozo played a full match for Waitakere United. The match ended 3-1 in favour of Team Wellington.
