Aussies Abroad weekend wrap

A remarkable Saturday saw all four Aussies goals being scored within a short period of time. While Chris Ikonomidis scored a brace for Lazio’s youth team, Mathew Leckie and Nikita Rukavytsya put their names on the scoresheet for FSV Frankfurt in a friendly.

In the English Premier League Chris Herd missed Aston Villa’s 2-1 loss at Everton due to an injury. Brad Jones was on the bench again when Liverpool drew 1-1 at West Bromwich and Mile Jedinak played a full match again when Crystal Palace lost 2-0 at Arsenal.

In the League Championship Alex Cisak was an unused substitute in Burnley’s 3-3 draw at Queens Park Rangers. Shane Lowry was missing due to suspension after his red card last week and Scott McDonald was also absent for Millwall when their team lost 3-0 at home against Reading where Adam Federici remained on the bench. Rhys Williams missed Middlesbrough’s scoreless draw at Doncaster due to his ruptured Achilles.

In League One Bailey Wright and Neil Kilkenny played full 90 minutes for Preston North End when their team won 2-0 against Notts County with Kilkenny also setting up the first goal. Elsewhere Swindon lost 1-0 at home against Oldham. Massimo Luongo played 72 minutes for Oldham while James Wesolowski played a full match for Oldham. Dean Bouzanis was on the bench when Carlisle lost 2-1 at Bristol and James Meredith was missing for Bradford due to his broken foot when his team lost 2-0 at Wolverhampton. Bradden Inman played a full match for Crewe Alexandra in an important 3-0 win against Sheffield United.

In League Two Ryan Williams was missing for Oxford United in their 2-1 win against Wimbledon. Shane Cansdell-Sherriff came back from injury and played a full match in Burton’s 1-1 against Exeter. Aaron Downes also played a full match for Torquay in their 1-0 win at Portsmouth while Ben McNamara was absent for Northampton in their 1-1 at Cheltenham.

In the Conference Premier Alex Baird and Joshua Riis were both absent when their teams met. Gateshead won 3-1 against Kidderminster. Mitchell Austin played the last 18 minutes for Lincoln in their 3-1 against Halifax.

In Germany’s Bundesliga Mitch Langerak remained on the bench for Dortmund in their narrow 2-1 win at bottom-placed Braunschweig. Robbie Kruse was still sidelined for Leverkusen due to his torn ACL. His team also won 2-1 against Stuttgart keeping them in second place.

In the 3. Liga in Germany Mustafa Amini was sorely missed when Dortmund’s second team lost 3-0 at home against Heidenheim.

In a friendly Mathew Leckie and Nikita Rukavytsya both scored at Karlsruhe. Leckie scored in the first half before he was substituted by Rukavytsya in the 67th minute. Only 13 minutes later he was on the scoresheet as well. Kwame Yeboah played 63 minutes for Mönchengladbach’s second team in a scoreless draw against 1. FC Köln’s second team.

In Italy’s Serie B Carl Valeri came on for Ternana in the 62nd minute in a 2-1 win against Cittadella.

In the Campionato Primavera, Italy’s youth league, Chris Ikonomidis was on fire for leaders Lazio when his team thrashed Trapani in a 6-0 win. He scored the second and the last goal and also played a full match. Paul Katsetis was absent when Catania won 1-0 at Latina.

In Portugal’s Primeira Liga Caleb Patterson-Sewell remained on the bench for Gil Vicente in a surprise draw (1-1) against SL Benfica.

In the Dutch Eredivisie Jason Davidson, Tommy Oar and Adam Sarota all played full matches for their respective teams. Davidson’s Heracles Almelo lost 2-1 at home against NAC Breda while FC Utrecht had a remarkable 1-1 draw against AFC Ajax. Eli Babalj was still absent for Alkmaar when his team won 2-0 against Groningen.

In the Dutch Eerste Divisie Harry Ascroft was an unused substitute for Venlo as his team beat FC Eindhoven by 2-1. Andrew Marveggio also warmed the bench in Telstar’s 3-1 win against Ajax’s youth side.

In Turkey’s SüperLig Kerem Bulut was absent when Akhisar Belediyespor won 3-1 against  Genclerbirligi.

In Belgium Mathew Ryan again played a full match when Brugge won 2-1 against RAEC Mons and moved back in second position again.

In the Greek Superleague Apostolis Giannou played a full match for Panionios GSS in a 1-0 loss against Ergotelis Creta.

In the Greek Football League 2 Billy Konstantindis was missing for Panserraikos due to his fourth yellow card and missed his team’s 2-1 win at Nestos Chrisoupolis. In another group of League 2 Niko Tsattalios played a full match for Kambaniakos when his team suffered a late equaliser at Keravnos Thesprotikou (2-2).

The Swiss Super League came back from the winter break this weekend. Dario Vidošić came on for Sion in the 68th minute, but was not able to turn things around when his team lost 0-1 at Zürich. Oliver Bozanic played 61 minutes in Luzern’s 1-3 loss at home against Grasshoppers.

In Cyprus Robert Stambolziev played 60 minutes for AE Kouklion in a 3-1 loss against Apollon Limassol.

In Scotland’s Premiership Curtis Good played his first match for his new club Dundee United in 1-1 draw at Partick Thistle. Jackson Irvine also played a full match for Kilmarnock against Ross County (2-2).

In Scotland’s League Cup Dylan McGowan’s Heart of Midlothian lost in penalties against Inverness and narrowly missed the final.

In Uruguay’s Primera División Richard Porta missed the first Clausura match for Club Nacional (2-0 at Racing Club).

In the Asian Champions League Qualification Andrew Barišić played a full match and scored both goals for South China when his team won 2-1 after extra-time at Singapore’s Tampines Rovers.

In Iran’s Pro League Iain Fyfe played until half-time when Mes Kerman earned a hard-fought point against league leaders Esteghlal Tehran. It was Mes’s 14th draw in 25 matches.

In New Zealand George Slefendorfas was not in the squad for WaiBOP United (3-1 against Wanderers SC). Richard Cardozo played 81 minutes for Waitakere United (1-0 against Auckland) and Jamie de Abreu was absent for Team Wellington (6-1 against Hawke’s Bay).
