Aussies Abroad weekend wrap

The Easter weekend was overshadowed by the tragic loss of Young Socceroo Dylan Tombides of West Ham. Players, club and fans paid tribute on Saturday to the 20-year-old who lost his brave three-year battle with cancer. In an emotional EPL match his life was honoured by a minute silence, a minute-long applause by the fans in the 38th minute and by retiring his shirt number 38.

Aussie goalkeeper Mat Ryan kept another clean sheet for Club Brugge, fellow custodian Mitch Langerak played a full match in Borussia Dortmund’s win over the weekend, while Socceroo Mathew Leckie scored for FSV Frankfurt and Sean Rooney helped Bengaluru FC clinch the I-League crown with an early goal.

In the English Premier League Mark Schwarzer played a full match when Chelsea suffered a 2-1 surprise loss at home against Sunderland. Chris Herd was absent from the matchday squad in Aston Villa’s scoreless draw with Southampton. Mile Jedinak converted a penalty which gave Crystal Palace the 1-0 win against West Ham United and safety from being relegated. Brad Jones was an unused substitute in Liverpool’s 3-2 win at Norwich.

In the League Championship Alex Cisak was an unused substitute in Burnley’s 1-0 win at Blackpool. Adam Federici was an unused substitute when Reading lost 3-0 at Wigan. Lucas Neill was missing due to hamstring strain in Doncaster Rovers’ 0-2 loss against Derby County. Rhys Williams was missing due to his ruptured Achilles when Middlesbrough lost 2-1 against Millwall for whom Scott McDonald came on after 85 minutes and Shane Lowry was not in the squad. On Monday Alex Cisak was an unused substitute again when Burnley gained promotion to the Premier League with a 2-0 win against Wigan Athletic. Scott McDonald played 67 minutes while Shane Lowry was not in the squad in Millwall’s scoreless draw against Doncaster Rovers for whom Lucas Neill was still missing.

In League One Bailey Wright played a full match while Neil Kilkenny played until 55 minutes when Preston North End lost 1-0 at Brentford. Massimo Luongo played a full match in Swindon Town’s 2-1 win at Coventry. James Meredith was not in the squad when Bradford won 1-0 against Peterborough. James Wesolowski played a full match in Oldham Athletic’s 1-0 win at Colchester. Bradden Inman played 79 minutes when Crewe Alexandra won three important points with a 3-1 victory at Shrewsbury. Dean Bouzanis was not in the squad in Carlisle United’s 1-1 draw with Wallsall.

On Monday Bailey Wright played a full match and scored with a volley while Neil Kilkenny remained on the bench when Preston won 5-2 against Shrewsbury. Massimo Luongo played a full match in Swindon Town’s 1-0 win against Bradford City for whom James Meredith made his comeback as a second-half substitute. James Wesolowski played a full match and was voted man of the match in Oldham Athletic’s scoreless draw with Coventry. Bradden Inman played 59 minutes when no goals were scored as well between Crewe Alexandra and Colchester.

In League Two Ryan Williams played 69 minutes when Oxford United lost 1-0 at home against York. Aaron Downes was an unused substitute in Torquay United’s 1-0 loss against Dagenham & Redbridge. Shane Cansdell-Sherriff played 82 minutes when Burton Albion won 3-0 against Hartlepool but was missing on Monday with an Achilles injury when Burton Albion drew 1-1 at Newport. Ryan Williams came on after 60 minutes when Oxford United lost 1-0 at Scunthorpe. Aaron Downes was an unused substitute in Torquay United’s 2-1 win at Exeter.

In the Conference Premier Alex Baird was not in the squad when Gateshead had a 2-2 draw with Southport. Joshua Riis was also missing in Kidderminster Harriers’ 3-1 win at Hyde. Lee Burns played a full match when Dartford lost 1-0 at Braintree and on Monday played a full match in Dartford’s 3-2 loss against Tamworth bringing them closer to relegation. Joshua Riis was again not in the in Kidderminster Harriers’ scoreless draw at Nuneaton Town. Also, Alex Baird was absent from the matchday squad when Gateshead won 2-0 at Macclesfield.

Mitchell Austin was an unused substitute for Jon Brady’s Brackley Town in their 1-1 draw at Worcester City. Adam Parkhouse was not in the squad when Stalybridge Celtic recorded an important 3-2 win against Gainsborough Trinity in order to avoid relegation.

In the 2. Bundesliga in Germany Mathew Leckie played a full match and scored the first goal of the match with a header while Nikita Rukavytsya was not in the squad when FSV Frankfurt lost 3-2 at Kaiserslautern.

In the Regionalliga West in Germany Kwame Yeboah did not play in Borussia Monchengladbach II’s 1-1 draw with SC Verl.

In the Bayernliga Nord Jonathan Faerber was not in the squad when FSV Erlangen-Bruck lost 2-0 at ASV Neumarkt.

In the Eccellenza Trentino-Alto Adige Josip Konyit played a full match when Trento Calcio drew with SSV Naturno.

In the Final of the KNVB-beker Trent Sainsbury was not in the squad when PEC Zwolle won the title with a 5-1 surprise win against AFC Ajax.

In the Dutch Eerste Divisie Harry Ascroft played 66 minutes while Travis Cooper was missing due to a torn quadricep when Venlo drew 3-3 with Almere. Andrew Marveggio came on after 85 minutes in Telstar’s 5-2 loss against Dordrecht. In the Malaysian Super League Ryan Griffiths played a full match and scored the winner in Sarawak’s 1-0 win at Kelantan. Mario Karlovic played a full match when Terengganu lost 2-0 against Perak. Steven Pantelidis also played a full match and scored the only goal in Selangor’s win against Singapore LIONS XII. Selangor is coached by Mehmet Durakovic. Spase Dilevski was not in the squad when ATM FA won 4-1 against PKNS Selangor.

In the Premier League in Malaysia Ndumba Makeche came after 55 minute and wasted no time scoring the winner just eleven minutes later when Felda United won 2-1 against Sabah for whom Srecko Mitrovic was missing due to Achilles injury. Adam Griffiths played a full match for David Mitchell’s Kedah in their 2-0 loss against DRB-Hicom.

In the S.League in Singapore Darren Stewart’s Woodlands Wellington won 2-1 at Tampines Rovers.

In the Indian I-League Daniell Zeleny was an unused substitute in Churchill Brothers’ 2-0 loss against Prayag United. Mirjan Pavlovic was also an unused substitute when Pune lost 2-1 against East Bengal. Simon Colosimo played a full match while Tolgay Ozbey was missing due to suspension (yellow cards) when Arthur Papas’ Dempo SC lost 4-2 against Bengaluru FC for whom Sean Rooney played 75 minutes and scored the first goal after only 2 minutes. Bengaluru also won the Championship with the win.
