The 2014-15 season is all but upon us, with leagues kicking off in Holland, Germany and England. Socceroos Josh Kennedy, Ryan McGowan and Massimo Luongo were among those on target while a couple of Aussies had a lucky escape in the UEFA Champions League.
In opening round matches from the Championship in England, Cameron Burgess played a full match while Adam Taggart was not in the squad as Fulham FC returned to the division following their relegation from the Premier League with a 2-1 loss away to Ipswich Town. Scott McDonald played a full match as Millwall FC won 2-0 over Leeds United. Adam Federici played a full match while Ryan Edwards played until the 60th minute as Reading FC played out a 2-2 draw with Wigan Athletic. Rhys Williams was missing due to ruptured Achilles as Middlesbrough FC won 2-0 over Birmingham City.
In the opening round of League One in England, Massimo Luongo played a full match and scored the opening goal inside the first four minutes as Swindon Town beat Scunthorpe United 3-1. Bailey Wright played a full match while Neil Kilkenny played until the 62nd minute as Preston North End and Notts County played out a 1-1 draw. Bradden Inman played a full match and scored a consolation goal as Crewe Alexandra lost 2-1 to Fleetwood Town. Shane Lowry played a full match as his new club Leyton Orient lost 2-1 at home to newly promoted Chesterfield FC. James Meredith was an unused substitute as Bradford City won 3-2 at home to Coventry City.
In opening round matches from League Two in England, James Wesolowski came on in the 56th minute as Shrewsbury Town drew 2-2 with AFC Wimbledon. Shane Cansdell-Sherriff was an unused substitute as Burton Albion won 1-0 away to Oxford United. Mitchell Austin was also an unused substitute for Cambridge United in their 1-0 win over Plymouth Argyle.
In the opening round of the Conference Premier in England, Aaron Downes played a full match for Torquay as they lost 3-1 away to Gateshead FC, for whom Alex Baird was not in the squad. Lee Burns played a full match for Dartford FC in their 2-1 home loss to Wrexham FC.
In opening round matches from the Conference North in England, Adam Parkhouse was not in the squad as Stalybridge Celtic drew 2-2 with Worcester City.
In round 3, legs 2 of qualifying for the UEFA Champions League, new signing Luke Wilkshire was not in the squad as Feyenoord lost 3-1 on the night and 5-2 on aggregate to Turkish Supa Liga side Besiktas JK. Tom Rogic was missing due to injury while Jackson Irvine was not in the squad as Celtic lost 2-0 at home to Legia Warsaw to complete a comprehensive 6-1 aggregate defeat to the Polish champions. However, Celtic will face NK Maribor of Slovenia in the next round after the Scottish side were handed a 3-0 'walkover' win for the second leg, taking them through on away goals after Legia fielded a suspended player.
In Round 3, second leg qualifying for the UEFA Europa League, Matt Ryan played a full match and kept a clean sheet as Club Brugge KV won 2-0 Brondby IF to advance by an aggregate score of 5-0. Anthony Carter was not in the squad as CFR Cluj lost 2-0 on the night and 3-0 on aggregate to Dinamo Minsk of Belarus. Nikita Rukavytsya was not in the squad as FSV Mainz were knocked out by PAE Asteras Tripoli, who won 3-1 on the night to complete a 3-2 aggregate victory.
In the Russian Premier Liga, Ivan Franjic was not in the squad as FK Torpedo Moskva were crushed 8-1 by Zenit St Petersburg.
In the Eerste Klasse in Belgium, Matt Ryan played a full match as Club Brugge KV drew 1-1 with SV Zulte Waregem.
In the opening round of the Eredivisie in the Netherlands, Luke Wilkshire played a full match on debut for new club Feyenoord in their 1-0 away win over ADO Den Haag. Trent Sainsbury played until the 27th minute of PEC Zwolle’s 2-0 win over FC Utrecht, for whom Adam Sarota came on in the 75th minute. Both Tommy Oar and Michael Zullo were missing for Utrecht due to injury. Eli Babalj was not in the squad as AZ Alkmaar won 3-0 away to Heracles Almero.
In the opening round of matches in the Eerste Divisie in the Netherlands, Andrew Marveggio came on in the 85th minute as Fortuna Sittard won 1-0 over Helmond Sport. Both Harry Ascroft and Travis Cooper were not in the squad as VVV-Venlo beat Jong Twente 1-0.
In the Austrian Bundesliga, James Holland was an unused substitute as FK Austria Wien drew 2-2 with SC Wiener Neustadt.
In the Swiss Super League, Dario Vidosic was not in the squad as FC Sion won 1-0 over FC Vaduz. Oliver Bozanic was also not in the squad as FC Luzern drew 1-1 with Grasshoppers.
In the Prva Liga in Croatia, Tomislav Mrcela came on in the 23rd minute and scored a goal as NK Lokomotiva Zagreb lost 5-2 to home to Hajduk Split. Steven Ugarkovic did not play as NK Osijek lost 2-1 at home to Dinamo Zagreb. Frane Vladislavic also did not play in either match as NK Istra 1961 were beaten 1-0 by HNK Rijeka, and later drew 1-1 with Slaven Belupo.
In the 2. deild karla in Iceland, Kile Kennedy played a full match as KF Fjarðabyggðar won 3-2 over UMF Afturelding.
In the opening round of the 2. Bundesliga in Germany, Mathew Leckie came on in the 70th minute as FC Ingolstadt 04 drew 2-2 with SV Darmstadt 98. Ben Halloran was an unused substitute as Fortuna Düsseldorf drew 1-1 with Union Berlin.
In the German 3. Liga, Mustafa Amini came on in the 68th minute as Borussia Dortmund II ran out 5-1 winners over Jahn Regensburg. In an earlier match, Amini was not in the squad as Dortmund II lost 1-0 to SV Wehen.
