Aussies Abroad weekend wrap

Mathew Leckie continued his good form, Scott McDonald rediscovered some of his Celtic magic and there were mixed results for the Aussies in Europa League action, while Matildas star Katrina Gorry's Kansas City picked up some major silverware.  

We kick things off with England, and there is plenty of action to get through this week. In the Premier League, Jason Davidson played 72 minutes for West Brom in a tough day at the office - going down 3-0 to Swansea City. Mile Jedinak put in the full 90 against Newcastle United in Crystal Palace’s 3-3 draw. Curtis Good was missing for Newcastle in that match. Chris Herd was not in the squad for Aston Villa as they beat Hull City 2-1, while Brad Jones was an unused substitute for Liverpool in their big 3-0 win over Tottenham and also earlier in the week during Liverpool’s 3-1 loss to Manchester City. Mark Schwarzer was not in the squad for Chelsea’s 6-3 win over Everton and Alex Cisak was not in the squad for Burnley in their 0-0 draw with Manchester United.

In the Championship, Scott McDonald played a full match for Millwall, scoring one goal and setting up another in their 2-1 win over Blackpool. Adam Federici played the 90 minutes for Reading, keeping a clean sheet, while Ryan Edwards set up the goal in their 1-0 win over Middlesbrough. Rhys Williams is still sidelined as he returns to fitnes from a ruptured Achilles and didn’t take part for Middlesbrough. Ryan Williams was an unused substitute for Fulham in their 1-1 draw with Cardiff City, while Cameron Burgess and Adam Taggart (injured) were not in the squad.

Over to League One, and James Meredith played a full match for Bradford City in their 2-0 win over Rochdale. Neil Kilkenny also played a full match for Preston North End in their 1-1 draw with Sheffield United, while Bailey Wright was an unused substitute. Swindon Town had a 1-1 draw with Coventry City with both Massimo Luongo and Socceroos first time call-up Brad Smith playing the full 90 minutes for The Robins. Shane Lowry came on as an 87th minute substitute for Leyton Orient in their 1-1 draw with Fleetwood Town, while Bradden Inman played a full match for Crewe Alexandria as they went down 2-0 to Gillingham FC.

In League Two, Shane Candsell-Sherriff played a full match for Burton Albion as they beat Mansfield Town 2-1, while James Wesolowski also played the full match as Shrewsbury Town beat Luton Town 2-0.

We head on down to the Conference Premier where there are plenty of Aussies plying their trade. Aaron Downes played a full match for Torquay United in their 3-1 over Lincoln City and also earlier in the week in their 1-1 draw with Aldershot Town. Alex Baird was not in the squad for Gateshead in their 2-1 over Chester FC, however he played the full match earlier in the week as Gateshead beat Altrincham 1-0. Joshua Riis wasn’t in the squad for either of Kidderminster Harriers’ matches this week, their 1-0 win over Dover Athletic or their 2-2 draw with Chester FC. Daniel Collins wasn’t in the squad for Wrexham FC in either of their matches this week, the 2-1 loss to Woking or the 2-2 draw with Macclesfield Town. The same for Lee Burns who was not in the squad for Dartford FC in either of their matches this week.

In the Conference North, Mitchell Austin played a full match for the Jon Brady coached Brackley Town, both against Chorley FC (2-1 loss) and the 0-0 draw with Worcester City. In the South, Shane Huke came on as a 60th minute substitute for Ebbsfleet United in their 1-0 loss to Basingstoke Town, and in the 87th minute in their 0-0 draw with Wealdstone FC.

In Under 21 Premier League action, Peter Skapetis played a full match and scored a penalty for Stoke City U21’s against Derby County U21’s, they won the match 2-1. Gethin Jones played a full match for Everton FC U21’s in their 0-0 draw with Fulham FC U21’s, while Hyuga Tanner was not in the squad for Blackburn Rovers U21’s, and Jordan Lyden & Thomas Strain were not in the squad for Aston Villa U21’s in their 1-1 draw. Aaron Lennex was an unused substitute for QPR U21’s in their 0-0 draw with Cardiff City U21’s, while earlier in the week Thomas Beadling was an unused substitute for Sunderland AFC U21’s in their 1-1 draw with Manchester City U21’s. English Premier League club Swansea City also announced the signing of Australian-born players James Demetriou and Giancarlo Gallifuoco to their U21 squad.

The second round of the English League Cup got underway earlier in the week and their were plenty of Aussies in action. Jason Davidson played a major part in West Brom’s 7-6 Penalty shootout win over Oxford United, he scored the winning penalty to send West Brom through to the next round. Shane Lowry played a full match for Leyton Orient as they upset Aston Villa 1-0, however Chris Herd was an unused substitute for Villa. James Meredith played a full match for Bradford City in their 2-1 win over Leeds United, as did Shane Cansdell-Sherriff for Burton Albion in their 1-0 win over QPR. Ryan Williams played a full match for Fulham in their 1-0 win over Brentford FC, however once again Adam Taggart and Cameron Burgess were not included in the squad. Alex Cisak did not make the squad for Burnley as they lost 1-0 to Sheffield Wednesday, the same for Curtis Good as Newcastle United beat Gillingham FC 1-0. Bradden Inman starred for Crewe Alexandria despite going down 3-2 to Bolton Wanderers in extra time, he scored 1 and set up the other.

Continuing on with the League Cup action, and James Wesolowski played a full match for Shrewsbury in their 1-0 win over Leicester City, while Adam Federici also played a full match for Reading, keeping a clean sheet, Ryan Edwards came on for Reading in the 74th minute in their 1-0 win over Scunthorpe United. Neil Kilkenny played a full match for Preston North End in their 0-0 draw with Middlesbrough, Bailey Wright was not in the squad for PNE while Rhys Williams didn’t take part for Middlesbrough as he continues his recovery. Scott McDonald was not in the squad for Millwall as they went down 2-0 to Southampton, while Mile Jedinak also wasn’t in the squad for Crystal Palace as they defeated Walsall FC 3-0. Brad Smith played the full match for Swindon Town in their 4-2 extra time loss to Brighton and Hove Albion, while Massimo Luongo played until the 77th minute before being substituted.

Over to Germany, and Mitch Langerak was an unused substitute in Dortmund’s 3-2 win over FC Augsberg in the Bundesliga, Nikita Rukavytsya was not in the squad for FSV Mainz in their 0-0 draw with Hannover 96, while Robbie Kruse was also not in the squad for Bayer Leverkusen as they beat Hertha BSC 4-2.

In the 2.Bundesliga, Mathew Leckie played until the 83rd minute and set up a goal for FC Ingolstadt as they beat SV Sandhausen 3-0, while Ben Halloran came on in the 81st minute for Fortuna Düsseldorf’s 3-0 win over Erzgebirge Aue.

Down to the 3. Liga, and Mustafa Amini was an unused substitute for Borussia Dortmund II as they played out a 0-0 draw with Hallescher FC. He was also an unused substitute earlier in the week when they lost 3-1 to FSV Mainz II. In the lower leagues, Jonathan Faerber was not in the squad for TSV 1860 Rosenheim as they lost 2-0 to TSV Bogen in the Bayernliga Süd, while Sam Gibson was not in the squad for TSV Germania Windeck as they beat SV Germania Erftstadt-Lechenich 1-0 in the Mittelrheinliga.

Matchday 4 of the Eredivisie in the Netherlands saw Trent Sainsbury play until halftime in PEC Zwolle’s 3-1 loss to NAC Breda, while Luke Wilkshire played a full match for Feyenoord as they drew 0-0 with FC Twente. Eli Babalj was not in the squad for AZ Alkmaar as they defeated FC Dordrecht 3-1, Tommy Oar played a full match, and set up FC Utrecht’s goal in a 3-1 loss to SC Heerenveen, Adam Sarota was an unused substitute while Michael Zullo continues his recovery from a rupture ACL.

In the Eerste Divisie, Alistair Quinn and Kenneth Dougall were both unused substitutes as SC Telstar defeated Almere City 3-1, while earlier in the week, Quinn came on as a 78th minute substitute for SC Telstar, Dougall was an unused substitute as they beat Fortuna Sittard 1-0. For Sittard, Andrew Marveggio was an unused substitute while against Achilles ’29 Marveggio came on as a 75th minute substitute as they won 3-0. Harry Ashcroft and Travis Cooper were unused substitutes for both of VVV-Venlo’s matches during the week, the 4-1 loss to FC Emmen and the 3-2 win over FC Oss.

In the Beloften Eredivisie, Eli Babalj played a full match and scored a hat-trick as Jong AZ Alkmaar defeated Jong Utrecht 4-3. Andrew Marveggio played for Jong Fortuna Sittard as they lost 3-1 to Jong Vitesse/AGOVV, while Harry Ashcroft and Travis Cooper played a full match for Jong VVV/Helmond as they defeated Jong Dordrecht 2-0.

Over in Italy, and Joshua Brillante had a difficult Seie A debut, substituted on 35 minutes in Fiorentina’s 2-0 loss to AS Roma, while Liam Graham and Panos Armenakas were not in the squad for Savona and Udinese respectively.

In Portugal, Caleb Patterson-Sewell was an unused substitute for Gil Vicente as they lost 2-1 to Maritimo in the Primeira Liga.

In the Eerste Klasse in Belgium, Maty Ryan played a full match for Club Brugge as they drew 2-2 with Anderlecht, while James Troisi was not in the squad for SV Zulte-Waregem as he made his way to Belgium after leaving Juventus on a 1 year contract.

In Turkey, Aziz Behich played a full match for Bursaspor as they lost 2-0 to Galatasaray, while Emre Balcı was on the bench for Diyarbakir as they lost 2-0 to Hatayspor in the 2. Lig. Kirmizi Grup.

Over in Greece, and Apostolis Giannou played a full match for Panionios GSS as they lost 2-1 to Panathinaikos, earlier in the week he played until the 88th minute and scored both goals as Panionios GSS beat Ergotelis Creta 2-1. Robert Stambolziev came on as a 72nd minute substitute in PAE Niki Volou’s 1-0 loss to Atromitos.

In Romania, Anthony Carter wasn’t in the squad for either of CFR Cluj’s matches this week, they beat FC Petrolul Ploiesti 2-1, and CS Gaz Metan Medias 4-1. Julius Davies was not in the squad for FC Oţelul Galaţi as they drew 0-0 with CSM Studenţesc Iași.

In the Prva Liga in Croatia, Roko Strika was not in the squad for NK Zagreb as they beat RNK Split 2-1, Tomislav Mrcela was in the starting eleven for NK Lokomotiva Zagreb as they beat Slaven Belupo 2-0, while Steven Ugarkovic came on for NK Osijek in the 74th minute as they drew 0-0 with NK Istra. Frane Vladislavic was not in the squad for Istra. In the Druga HNL, Josip Konyit was not in the squad for NK Inter Zapresic as they beat NK Imotski 4-1.

In Scotland, Tom Rogic was still missing for Celtic FC with the adductor muscle injury he sustained, Celtic drew 1-1 with Dundee FC.

Over in Norway, Eliza Campbell played a full match for Medkila IL as they drew 0-0 with Roa IL, while earlier in the week she also played a full match as Medkila lost 2-0 to Valerenga. In the Men’s 3.Division Avdeling 2, Saka played a full match as Hasle-Løren IL defeated Ullensaker/Kisa 2-1.

In Russia, Ivan Franjic was missing for Torpedo Moskva with injury, they lost 1-0 against Mordovia Saransk.

Dario Vidosic was an unused substitute in Switzerland as his side FC Sion lost 2-1 to FC Thun, while Oliver Bozanic was missing for FC Luzern with a back injury, they drew 1-1 with FC Aarau.

In Austria, James Holland played a full match for FK Austria Wien, they lost 2-1 to Admira in the Bundesliga.

Kile Kennedy played a full match for KF Fjarðabyggðar against KF Fjallabyggðar in Iceland’s 2. deild karla, they won 4-0 and he kept a clean sheet. In the Úrvalsdeild kvenna, Carys Hawkins was in the starting eleven for Fylkir as they beat FH Hafnarfjarðar 3-1.

Mark Griffin was an unused substitute as Dundalk FC beat Bohemian FC 3-2 in Ireland’s Premier Division.

In Malta, Charlie Fuller and Jordan Nadalin were not in the squad for Balzan Youths as they beat Qormi FC 2-1 in the Premier League, while Adrian Zahra came on in the 62nd minute for Valletta FC as they beat Floriana FC 2-0.

European action continued during the week as the Europa League and Champions League started to heat up. Luke Wilkshire played a full match for Feyenoord as they advanced to the group stages of the Europa League 5-4 on aggregate over Zorya Lugansk. Trent Sainsbury played a full match as PEC Zwolle lost 3-1 to AC Sparta Praha, they bowed out of the competition 4-2 on aggregate. Maty Ryan played a full match and kept a clean sheet as Club Brugge progressed to the group stages of the Europa League 3-1 on aggregate.

In the Champions League, Tom Rogic and Jackson Irvine were both missing from the squad as Celtic bowed out of the competition at the hands of NK Maribor 2-1 on aggregate. Robbie Kruse was missing for Bayer Leverkusen as they progressed 7-2 on aggregate over FC Kobenhavn.

Over in Asia, and in Japan Joshua Kennedy was not in the squad for Nagoya Grampus as they drew 1-1 with Kawasaki Frontale in the J-League. In the Nadeshiko League, Clare Polkinghorne played until halftime in INAC Kobe Leonessa’s 2-2 draw with Urawa RD Ladies.

Robert Cornthwaite was not in the squad for Jeonnam as they beat Jeonbuk 2-1 in Korea’s K-League, Alex Wilkinson was not in the squad for Jeonbuk either. Aleksandar Jovanovic played a full match for Jeju United as they drew 0-0 with FC Seoul. Luke DeVere was not in the squad for Gyeongnam FC as they lost 1-0 to Suwon Bluewings.

In China’s Super League, Daniel McBreen played a full match for Shanghai Dongya as they drew 1-1 with Shànghai Lǜdì Shenhua. Jonas Salley also played a full match for Guizhou Renhe as they lost 1-0 to Changchun Yatai while Ryan McGowan played a full match for Shandong Luneng Taishan as they beat Henan Jianye 2-1. Josh Mitchell played a full match for Liaoning Hongyun as they were beaten 6-0 by Guangzhou Hengda, while Adam Hughes played twice during the week, during Ha’erbin Yiteng’s 2-0 loss to Beijing Guoan and their 3-1 win over Hángzhōu Lǜchéng earlier in the week.

In Singapore, Joseph Taylor played a full match for Tampine Rovers Reserves as they lost 2-1 to Balestier Khalsa in the Prime League, while he also played a full match midweek during Tampine Reserves’ rearranged match against Hougang United where they lost 4-2, and he came on in the 76th minute earlier in the week during Tampines 2-0 loss to Warriors FC in the S-League. Justin Pasfield played the full match for Tampines in that fixture as well. Earlier in the week Pasfield also played a full match as Tampines drew 2-2 with Albirex Niigata.

Over in Malaysia, Mario Karlovic played until the 84th minute for Terengganu as they drew 2-2 with Kedah FA, Adam Griffiths was not in the squad for Kedah. Earlier in the week, Karlovic played 86 minutes as Terengganu drew 1-1 with Perak FA, while Adam Griffiths came on as a substitute in the 60th minute in Keda’s 2-1 win over Sarawak FA. His brother Ryan Griffiths played the full match for Sarawak in that midweek fixture, while he did not take part in Serawak’s weekend match against Perak FA where they drew 1-1. Steve Pantelidis played a full match for the Mehmet Durakovic coached Selangor FA against PDRM FA where they drew 1-1, while earlier in the week, Pantelidis played a full match again in their 2-1 loss to Sjme Darby.

Still in Malaysia, and Goran Subara’s T-Team FC lost to Sjme Darby 2-1, while earlier in the week they went down 2-1 to PDRM FA. Ndumba Makeche played a full match for Felda United as they beat Johor Darul Takzim II 3-1, earlier in the week he came on in the 60th minute as Felda lost 2-0 to Pahang FA. Spase Dilevski was not in the squad for either of ATM FA’s fixtures this week as they lost 1-0 to Darul Takzim and beat Kelantan FA 2-1.

In Indonesia, Abu Bakar Sillah was not in the squad as Persepam Madura United lost 3-1 to Persebaya Surabaya, while earlier in the week he also missed the cut as Persepam drew 1-1 with Putra Samarinda.

Over in Qatar, Mark Bresciano played 69 minutes before being substituted in Al Gharafa’s 2-2 draw with Al Arabi.

In the Maldives, Dane Milanovic played the full match for New Radiant SC, scoring the opening goal in the 4-0 win over Club All Youth Linkage.

Off to South America, and Gavin de Niese played the first 60 minutes in River Plate’s 1-0 loss to Rosario Central in Argentina’s Quinta. In the Copa Sudamericana, Richard Porta was an unused substite as Independiente del Valle progressed to the next round at the expense of Trujillanos FC, 2-1 on aggregate.

In the CONCACAF Champions League, Tim Cahill played until the 88th minute for New York Red Bulls, setting up a goal in their 2-0 win over CD FA Santenecos. Cahill also played until the 90th minute before being substituted in Red Bulls 2-0 loss to DC United in the MLS.

Also in the MLS, Andy Rose came on in the 91st minute for Seattle Sounders as they beat Colorado Rapids 1-0. Earlier in the week, Rose came on in the 80th minute as the Sounders beat Portland Timbers 4-2.

In the National Women’s Soccer League Final, Katrina Gorry was an unused substitute as FC Kansas City defeated Seattle Reign 2-1 to lift the National Women's Soccer League title.

Earlier in the week, Lisa De Vanna’s Washington Spirit were knocked out in the second Semi Final, going down 2-1 to Seattle Reign, she was not in the squad for that one.

In the USL Pro League, Yahaya Musa and Albert Edward were not in the squad for Wilmington as they drew 0-0 with Sacramento, Harrison Delbridge was an unused substitute for Sacramento. Earlier in the week, Musa and Edward were not in the squad for Wilmington as they defeated Orlando 3-1, while Delbridge was once again an unused substitute as Sacramento defeated Charleston 3-1.

Over in Kenya, Ian Niva was not in the squad as Gor Mahia FC drew 0-0 with KCB Nairobi.
