Aussies Abroad weekend wrap

A slightly shorter Aussies Abroad wrap this week due to the international break, which saw most of the major Leagues across Europe and England go on a mini hiatus.

Some of our overseas-based players were in action for the Socceroos as they went down 2-0 to Belgium in Liege last week, and now look to take on Saudi Arabia at Craven Cottage on Tuesday morning (AEST) in the build up to January’s Asian Cup.

As usual, we kick things off in England and while there was no Barclays Premier League action, the lower leagues continued where they left off last week with League One first on the agenda and James Meredith playing a full match for Bradford City as they went down 3-1 to Yeovil Town in Matchday 6.

In England’s League Two, James Wesolowski played a full match for Shrewsbury Town as they lost 2-0 to Hartlepool United, while Shane Cansdell-Sherriff played until the 83rd minute for Burton Albion in their 2-0 win over Portsmouth.

Down to the Conference Premier League, and Joshua Riis and Alex Baird were not in the squad for Kidderminster Harriers and Gateshead FC respectively - Kidderminster going on to win that match 2-1. Daniel Collins was not in the squad for Wrexham FC as they beat Forest Green Rovers 1-0, Alex Grant was not in the squad for Macclesfield Town as they lost 1-0 to Chester FC, and Lee Burns was not in the squad for Dartford FC as they lost 2-1 to Altrincham FC. Aaron Downes got on the scoresheet and played a full match for Torquay United as they beat Nuneaton Town 4-0.

In the Conference North, Mitchell Austin played a full match for the Jon Brady coached Brackley Town as they went down 3-0 to Guiseley AFC. While in the South, Shane Huke played a full match for Ebbsfleet United as they beat St Albans City 4-1.

In the WSL Cup, Danielle Brogan played a full match for Notts County Ladies as they went down 2-0 to Arsenal Ladies in Extra Time, while in the Women’s FA Super League, she played the full match as well. Caitlin Friend came on in both matches as a substitute.

In Football League Trophy action, Bradden Inman played 71 minutes for Crewe Alexandria as they were eliminated in a 3-0 loss to Rochdale. James Meredith played 74 minutes as Bradford City lost to 1-0 to Oldham Athletic, while Shane Lowry played the full match for Leyton Orient as they progressed to the next round 3-2 over Peterborough United. James Wesolowski came on as a 72nd minute substitute for Shrewsbury Town as they lost 1-0 to Preston North End. Bailey Wright (on Socceroos duty) and Neil Kilkenny were not in the squad for PNE.

In the Under 21’s, Giancarlo Gallifuoco was part of the squad for Swansea as they lost 2-1 to Sheffield Wednesday. James Demetriou did not make the squad. Gallifuoco also played a full match earlier in the week as Swansea beat Birmingham City U21’s 3-2. Aaron Lennox was an unused substitute for Queens Park Rangers as they beat Barnsley FC U21’s 2-0, while Tom King did not play for Bristol City U21’s as they beat Crewe Alexandria 2-0.

Over to Germany, and in the Regionalliga West, Kwame Yeboah was an unused substitute in Borussia Monchengladbach II’s 4-3 win over FC Hennef. Brandon Chin came on for Hennef in the 87th minute. Earlier in the week, Yeboah was also an unused substitute in Borussia Monchengladbach II’s 3-2 win over SG Wattenscheid 09.

In the Mittelrheinliga, Sam Gibson was not in the squad for TSV Germania Windeck as they won 2-0 over FC Hurth, while in the Hessenliga, Max Haubus came on in the 76th minute for SV Rot Weiss Hadamar as they lost 1-0 to FSC Lohfelden. In the Bayernliga Sud, Jonathan Faerber was not in the squad for TSV 1860 Rosenheim as they lost 2-0 to TSV 1865 Dachau.

Not much action in the Netherlands with the international break – the only Aussie taking to the pitch was Eli Babalj who played the full match for Jong AZ Alkmaar, scoring a goal in their 3-2 loss to Jong Heracles.

In Italy, Liam Graham was not in the squad in Aurora Pro Patria’s 5-3 loss to AC Pavia in the Lega Pro – Girone A.

Over to Turkey, and Emre Balci played a full match for Diyarbakır BBSK as they beat Altay SK Izmir 1-0 o the 2.Lig.

In Croatia, Mario Simic was not in the squad for NK Lucko as the beat NK Rudes 4-1, while Josip Konyit was also not in the squad as NK Inter Zapresic beat NK Sesvete 4-1.

In the Norwegian Toppserien, Eliza Campbell played a full match for Medkila IL as they lost 3-1 against Stabaek, while earlier in the week she played a full match as Medkila bowed out of the NM Kvinner at the quarterfinal stage. In the 3. Division, Saka played a full match for Hasle-Loren IL as they beat Lorenskog 3-1.

In Iceland, Kile Kennedy played a full match for KF Fjarðabyggðar as they drew 1-1 with Huginn KF, while in the Urvalsdeild kvenna, Carys Hawkins started the match for Fylkir in a 2-0 win over Valur.

In the Irish Premier Division, Mark Griffin was an unused substitute for Dundalk FC as they lost 1-0 to St Patrick’s Dublin.

In Greece, Theo Markelis was not in the squad for PAE Veria FC as they beat OFI Creta 1-0 in the Superleague.

In Romania’s Liga 1, Julius Davies was not in the squad for FC Otelul Galati as they had a 2-0 win over FC Rapid Bucuresti.

In Uzbekistan, Petar Franjic was an unused substitute for Olmaliq FK as they went down 3-0 to Pakhtakor in the Ozbekiston Professional Futbol Ligasi.

In the K-League in Korea, Luke DeVere was not in the squad for Gyeongnam FC as they went down 2-1 to Ulsan Hyundai. Alex Wilkinson was not in the squad for Jeonbuk FC due to Socceroos commitments, as they beat Sangju Sangmu 2-0. Aleksandar Jovanovic played a full match for Jeju United as they beat Jeonnam Dragons 6-2. Robert Cornthwaite was not in the squad for Jeonnam.

In Indonesia, Michael Baird was not in the squad for PSM Makassar as they lost away 2-1 to Mitra Kukar, while earlier in the week he was also not in the squad as PSM lost 2-1 to Putra Samarinda. Abu Bakar Sillah was also not in the squad for either of Persepam Madura United’s matches, as they lost 2-1 to Persipura Jayapura and had a 1-1 draw with Perseru Serui earlier in the week.

In Malaysia, Adam Griffiths came on in injury time for Kedah FA as they beat Perak FA 2-0. Mario Karlovic played 53 minutes for Terengganu FA as they drew 0-0 with Perak FA. Ryan Griffiths did not make the squad for Perak. The Mehmet Durakovic coached Selangor FA had a 1-0 win over T-Team FC with Goran Subara playing a full match for T-Team. Ndumba Makeche played a full match, scored a goal and set up another as Felda United beat Singapore Lions 3-1, while Spase Dilevski was not in the squad for ATM FA as they lost 2-1 to Penang FA.

In South America there wasn’t much action with just Richard Porta coming on as a substitute for Independiente del Valle as they beat CS Emelec 5-0 in the Campeonato Serie A – Segunda Etapa.

Last up, and in the USA, Tim Cahill was missing from New York Red Bulls due to Socceroos commitments as they beat Sporting Kansas City 2-1, while Andy Rose played a full match and scored 2 goals as Seattle Sounders beat Chivas USA 4-2 in the MLS. In the USL Pro League, Harrison Delbridge played a full match for Sacramento Republic as they lost 2-1 to LA Galaxy Reserves, while both Yahaya Musa and Albert Edwards were missing from the Wilmington Hammerheads squad for both of their matches during the week.
