Aussies Abroad Weekend Wrap

OUR German-based Aussies stole the headlines with starring performances across the weekend.

In the German Bundesliga, Robbie Kruse put in a man of the match performance on his starting debut with a brace and an assist in Bayer Leverkusen’s 4-1 win over FSV Mainz. With regular left-winger Heung-Min Son rested following Leverkusen’s midweek Champions League clash with Manchester United, Kruse made the most of his opportunity with a devastating first half performance. Kruse opened the scoring on 19 minutes with a neat finish on the outside of his foot after latching onto Sidney Sam’s well weighted pass. Kruse then turned provider, feeding Lars Bender whose deflected effort from outside the box made it 2-0. Kruse scored his second on the stroke of half time with a fine finish on his left foot across the keeper from inside the box.

In the German Second Division, Mathew Leckie starred with a brace and an assist in FSV Frankfurt’s 4-1 win over FC Ingolstadt. Leckie was replaced on 63 minutes by fellow Aussie Nikita Rukavytsya, with the former Glory speedster missing a golden opportunity just moments after coming on.
