Aussies Abroad weekend wrap

Aussies were among the silverware in Asia and Africa in another huge week for the green and gold abroad. Alex Wilkinson claimed the Korean League title with Jeonbuk, Ryan McGowan secured a win in the Chinese FA Cup Final with Shandong Luneng, while Ian Niva took home the Kenyan league title with Gor Mahia.

Elsewhere, Socceroos attacker James Troisi again starred in Belgium, setting up all three of his side’s goals in a crucial 3-1 win. Tim Cahill and New York Red Bulls booked their place in the MLS Eastern Conference Final and Chris Ikonomidis scored his now customary goal, helping Lazio Youth to another convincing win.

In the English Premier League, Brad Jones was an unused substitute as Liverpool FC lost 2-1 at home to league leaders Chelsea, for whom Mark Schwarzer was not in the squad. Mile Jedinak was missing due to suspension as Crystal Palace lost 1-0 away to Manchester United. In an earlier match, Jedinak was sent off in the 87th minute (second bookable offence) as Palace were beaten 3-1 at home by Sunderland AFC. Curtis Good was missing due to injury as Newcastle United won 2-0 away at West Bromwich Albion, for whom Jason Davidson was not in the squad.

In the Championship in England, Adam Federici played a full match while Ryan Edwards was not in the squad for Reading FC in their 1-0 home loss to Charlton Athletic. Scott McDonald came on in the 57th minute for Millwall FC in their 3-2 home loss to Brentford FC. Cameron Burgess was not in the squad while Adam Taggart was missing due to injury as Fulham FC won 3-1 at home to Huddersfield Town. Rhys Williams was missing due to injury as Middlesbrough FC played out a goalless draw with AFC Bournemouth. Chris Herd was not in the squad for Bolton Wanderers in their 3-1 home win over Wigan Athletic.

In matches played earlier in the week, Federici played a full match and kept a clean sheet while Edwards was again not in the squad as Reading recorded a 3-0 home win against Rotherham United.  McDonald played until the 64th minute for Millwall as they played out a 2-2 draw with Blackburn Rovers. Rhys Williams was again missing due to injury as Middlesbrough moved up to second place with a 4-0 home win over Norwich City. Herd was not in the squad as Bolton won 3-0 at home to Cardiff City. Burgess was again not in the squad while Taggart was missing due injury for Fulham in their 2-2 home draw with bottom club Blackpool FC.

In the English League One, Massimo Luongo played a full match as Swindon Town recorded a 1-0 home win over Preston North End, for whom Neil Kilkenny played until the 65th minute and Bailey Wright was missing due to injury.

In the English Conference North, Danijel Nizic played a full match for Chorley FC in their 2-1 home loss to Boston United. Earlier in the week, Nizic again played a full match as Chorley won 4-3 away to Gainsborough Trinity.

In the Conference South in England, Shane Huke came on in the 81st minute as Ebbsfleet United played out a goalless draw with Bath City.

In the opening round of the FA Cup in England, Massimo Luongo played a full match for League One side Swindon Town as they were smashed 5-0 away to League Two Cheltenham Town. Lee Burns also played a full match as Dartford FC won 4-3 away to Bromley FC. Ryan Williams played until the 61st minute as Barnsley cruised to a 5-0 win over Burton Albion, for whom Shane Cansdell-Sherriff played a full match. Mitchell Austin played a full match for Southport FC as they drew 0-0 with Dagenham & Redbridge. Shane Lowry also played a full match as Leyton Orient lost 1-0 away to Oldham Athletic. Bradden Inman came on in the 80th minute as Crewe Alexandra played out a scoreless draw with Sheffield United. James Meredith played a full match as Braford City won 2-1 away to Halifax Town. James Wesolowski came on in the 46th minute as Shrewsbury Town drew 2-2 with Walsall FC. Alex Cisak was not in the squad for York City in their 1-1 draw at home to AFC Wimbledon. Alex Baird was an unused substitute for Gateshead FC in their 4-0 away win over Norton United. Daniel Collins was not in the squad for Wrexham FC as they won 3-0 at home to Woking FC.

In the Evo-Stik League Division One South in England, Greg Downes played a full match as Romulus FC won 4-2 at home to Sheffield FC. Earlier in the week, Downes again played a full match for Romulus in their 4-0 win away at Chasetown FC.

In the U21 Premier League Division 1 in England, Thomas Beadling was an unused substitute as Sunderland AFC U21 won 4-0 at home to Fulham FC U21, for whom Cameron Burgess played a full match. Callum Elder was not in the squad as Leicester City U21 won 3-2 away at Manchester United U21.

In the English U21 Premier League Division 2, Hyuga Tanner was in the starting eleven for Blackburn Rovers U21 as they played out a 2-2 draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers U21. Ryan Edwards played a full match for Reading FC U21 as they lost 2-1 at home to Derby County U21. Curtis Good was missing due to injury as Newcastle United U21 ran out 5-0 winners at home over Aston Villa U21, for whom Thomas Strain was an unused substitute while Jordan Lyden was not in the squad. In the German 3. Liga, Mustafa Amini played a full match as Borussia Dortmund II won 3-0 at home to Energie Cottbus.

In the Regionalliga West in Germany, Kwame Yeboah was an unused substitute for Borussia Monchengladbach II in their 4-0 away win over FC Kray. Brandon Chin and Zane Chothia were not in the squad for FC Hennef 05 in their 0-0 draw with Fortuna Dusseldorf II.

In the Bayernliga Sud in Germany, Jonathan Faerber was not in the squad for TSV 1860 Rosenheim as they lost 4-2 away to FC Pipinsried.

In the Primeira Liga in Portugal, Caleb Patterson-Sewell was an unused substitute for Gil Vicente in their 2-0 loss away to Sporting Braga.

In the Russian Premier Liga, Ivan Franjic was an unused substitute for Torpedo Moscow in their 1-0 home loss to Lokomotiv Moscow. Earlier in the week, Franjic played a full match for Torpedo in their 1-0 home loss to Arsenal Tula.

In the Italian Serie A, Panos Armenakas was not in the squad for Udinese in their 1-1 draw with Palermo. Josh Brillante was also not in the squad as AC Fiorentina lost 1-0 at home to SS Napoli.

In the Italian Campionato Primavera, Chris Ikonomidis played a full match and scored the opening goal in first half stoppage time to help Lazio Youth on their way to a 3-0 win away to Livorno Youth.

In the Eredivisie in the Netherlands, Trent Sainsbury played a full match and set up the final goal of the game as PEC Zwolle won 2-0 at home to FC Groningen. Eli Babalj was not in the squad for AZ Alkmaar as they won 1-0 away to NAC Breda. Both Tommy Oar and Michael Zullo were missing due to injury as FC Utrecht drew 2-2 away to SBV Excelsior. Luke Wilkshire was not in the squad for Feyenoord as they played out a goalless draw with Vitesse Arnhem.

Earlier in the week, Mrcela played a full match as Lokomotiva Zagreb won 4-2 at home to NK Istra 1961, for whom Frane Vladislavic was not in the squad. Steven Ugarkovic played until the 66th minute as NK Osijek lost 2-1 away to Hajduk Split. Roko Strika came on in the 72nd minute as NK Zagreb played out a scoreless draw with Dinamo Zagreb.

In the Indian Super League, Andrew Barisic played until the 76th minute as Kerala Blasters drew 0-0 with Delhi Dynamos. Tolgay Ozbey played until the 77th minute for FC Goa as they also played out a scoreless draw with Mumbai City FC. 

In the opening round of the Hong Kong League Cup, Jerrad Tyson was an unused substitute for Sun Pegasus as they won 3-2 away at Wong Tai Sin.

In the third-place playoff of the Singapore Cup, Justin Pasfield played a full match as Tampines Rovers were beaten 2-1 by Brunei DPMM.

In the final round of matches in the Uzbekistan Professional Futbol Ligasi, Petar Franjic was an unused substitute as Olmaliq FK drew 2-2 away to Nasaf Qarshi.

In the first leg of the Major League Soccer Western Conference semi-finals in the United States, Andy Rose was not in the squad for Seattle Sounders as they drew 1-1 away to FC Dallas. Meanwhile, in the second leg of the Eastern Conference semi-finals, Tim Cahill came on in the 65th minute as New York Red Bulls lost 2-1 away to DC United. New York advances to the Eastern Conference Finals with an aggregate score of 3-2.
