Aussies Abroad weekend wrap

Not many matches this week due to the Christmas break, although a handful of Socceroos will arrive in the Asian Cup training camp off the back of some good form. Massimo Luongo nabbed another goal for Swindon Town, Mile Jedinak set up a goal in the Premier League for Crystal Palace, and Mat Ryan kept a clean sheet in a big win for Club Brugge.

Elsewhere, goalkeeper Alex Cisak, on loan at York City from Premier League club Burnley, kept two clean sheets in matches this week, while there were goals for Shane Cansdell-Sherriff in the English League Two, Sean Rooney in the Indian Federation Cup, and Dylan Macallister in the Hong Kong Senior Shield.

In the English Premier League, Mile Jedinak played a full match as Crystal Palace drew 0-0 away to Queens Park Rangers. Brad Jones was in the starting XI but came off with injury in the 16th minute as Liverpool FC won 1-0 away to Burnley FC. Chris Herd was an unused substitute for Aston Villa as they played out a scoreless draw with Sunderland AFC. Mark Schwarzer was not in the squad as league leading Chelsea FC was held to a 1-1 draw away to Southampton FC. Curtis Good was also not in the squad as Newcastle United won 3-2 at home to Everton FC. Jason Davidson was another not in the squad as West Bromwich Albion lost 2-0 at Stoke City.

In matches earlier in the week, Jedinak played a full game and set up his side’s only goal as Palace lost 3-1 at home to Southampton to slip into the relegation zone. Herd was an unused substitute as Villa lost 1-0 away to Swansea City. Good was not in the squad for Newcastle as they lost 3-1 away to Manchester United. Davidson was also not in the squad as West Brom lost 3-1 at home to Manchester City. Mark Schwarzer was not in the squad for either match as Chelsea first won 1-0 away to Stoke City before winning 2-0 at home to West Ham United.

In the Championship in England, Adam Federici played a full match as Reading FC won 2-1 at home to Norwich City. Scott McDonald played a full match as Millwall FC lost 2-0 at home to league leading AFC Bournemouth. Rhys Williams was not in the squad for Middlesbrough FC as they played out a goalless draw with Blackburn Rovers.

From matches played earlier in the week, Federici put in a full shift as Reading drew 2-2 with Brighton & Hove Albion. Rhys Williams came on in the 90th minute as Middlesbrough beat Nottingham Forest 3-0. McDonald was an unused substitute as Millwall were hammered 6-1 away to Norwich. Both Cameron Burgess and Adam Taggart were not in the squad while Ryan Williams was missing due to injury as Fulham FC lost 2-0 away to AFC Bournemouth.

In the English League One, James Meredith played a full match for Bradford City as they won 1-0 at home to Notts County. In the English Evo-Stik Division One South, Greg Downes played a full match as Romulus FC lost 1-0 away to Kidsgrove Athletic.

In the opening round of matches in the English FA Trophy, Huke played a full match for Ebbsfleet United as they beat Welling United 3-2 in extra time after the match finished 2-2 after 90 minutes.

In the round of 16 in the U21 English Premier League Cup, Curtis Good was missing due to injury as Newcastle United won 4-1 at home to West Ham United U21. Ryan Edwards was not in the squad for Reading FC U21 as they beat Bolton Wanderers U21 3-1 in extra time after the match finished 1-1 after 90 minutes.

In the Eerste Klasse in Belgium, Mat Ryan played a full match and kept a clean sheet as league leaders Club Brugge KV hammered bottom of the table Lierse SK 6-0. James Troisi also played a full match as SV Zulte Waregem lost 3-1 at home to Sporting Charleroi.

In round 3 of the Portuguese Taca da Liga, Caleb Patterson-Sewell played a full match as Gil Vicente lost 2-1 away to Sporting Covilha.

In the Scottish Premier League, Tom Rogic was not in the squad for Celtic FC while Jackson Irvine was also not in the squad for Ross County (ineligible to play against his parent club) as the side’s played out a scoreless draw.

In the Turkish SuperLig, Aziz Behich played a full match as Bursaspor won 2-1 away to Gaziantepspor.

In the fourth round of the Turkish Kupasi, Behich came on in the 84th minute as Bursaspor won 3-2 away to Samsunspor. Emre Balci was not in the squad for Diyarbakir BBSK as they lost 4-1 at home to giants Galatasaray SK.

In the semi-finals of the Hong Kong Senior Shield, Dylan Macallister played a full match and scored as Eastern Salon won 3-1 away to South China AA, for whom Evan Kostopoulos played until half-time.

In the Federation Cup in India, Sean Rooney played a full match and scored to help his Bengaluru FC side to a 3-2 comeback win away to Salgaocar SC.
