Aussies Abroad weekend wrap

Two Aussies with two goals in as many matches this week - River Plate’s Gavin de Niese and Fulham U21’s Adam Taggart both on target twice, netting a winning goal each along the way. There were also goals for Ndumba Makeche in the opening round of the Malaysian Super League, while Anthony Carter and James Holland both scored in friendly matches.

Aussies were also laying goals on, particularly in the English lower divisions where Taylor Tombides and Greg Downes set up two goals each, while James Meredith et up a goal in League One.

In the English Premier League, Mark Schwarzer played a full match as Leicester City lost 1-0 at home to Crystal Palace, for whom Mile Jedinak was not in the squad. Brad Jones was missing due to injury as Liverpool FC was held to a 0-0 draw with local rivals Everton FC. Curtis Good was not in the squad for Newcastle United as they drew 1-1 away to Newcastle United. Jason Davidson was also not in the squad as West Bromwich Albion came back to draw 2-2 with Burnley FC.

In the Championship in England, Adam Federici played a full match for Reading FC as they won 2-1 away to Wolverhampton Wanderers. Chris Herd played until the 59th minute as Wigan Athletic lost 3-1 at home to top of the table AFC Bournemouth. Rhys Williams was missing due to injury as Middlesbrough FC won 3-1 at home to Charlton Athletic. Adam Taggart was not in the squad for Fulham FC as they played to a 1-1 draw with Birmingham City.

In the English League One, James Meredith played a full match and set up one goal as Bradford City were held to a 2-2 draw away to Port Vale. Massimo Luongo also played a full match as Swindon Town won 2-0 at home to Barnsley FC. Neil Kilkenny played until the 66th minute while Bailey Wright was an unused substitute for Preston North End as they won 1-0 at home to Coventry City. Bradden Inman was an unused substitute as Crewe Alexandra won 3-2 at Colchester United.

In League Two in England, Callum Elder played a full match as Mansfield Town won 1-0 at home to Stevenage FC. Shane Cansdell-Sherriff was an unused substitute for Burton Albion as they won 3-1 away to Cheltenham FC. James Wesolowski was missing due to injury as Shrewsbury Town drew 1-1 with Southend United. Mitchell Austin was not in the squad for Cambridge United as they lost 1-0 at home to Wycombe Wanderers.

In the fourth round of the FA Cup in England, Neil Kilkenny played a full match while Bailey Wright was an unused substitute for Preston North End as they won 3-1 away to fellow League One side Sheffield United. Adam Taggart was not in the squad (rested after playing for the U21’s) as Fulham FC lost 3-1 at home to Premier League side Sunderland AFC. Brad Jones was missing due to injury as Liverpool came from behind to win 2-1 away to Championship side Bolton Wanderers. Mitchell Austin was not in the squad for Cambridge United as they lost 3-0 away to Premier League giants Manchester United.

In the English Conference Premier, Alex Grant played a full match as Macclesfield Town won 3-2 against Welling United.

In the Conference South in England, Jeremy Walker played a full match for Concord Rangers as they played out a scoreless draw with Sutton United.

In the Isthmian Premier League in England, Taylor Tombides played until the 89th minute and set up two goals as Canvey Island won 3-0 away to Dulwich Hamlet. Shane Huke was missing due to injury as Maidstone United won 2-0 away to Wingate & Finchley. In an earlier match, Tombides was not in the squad for Canvey as they won 2-1 away to Lewes FC.

In the Evo-Stik Division One South in England, Greg Downes played a full match and set up two goals as Romulus FC won 3-2 at home to Stocksbridge Park Steels.

In the quarterfinals of the English FA Trophy, Aaron Downes played until the 34th minute as Torquay United won 1-0 at home to United of Manchester. Earlier, in round three replays, Alex Baird was not in the squad as Gateshead FC lost to Wrexham FC 5-3 on penalties after the match finished tied 2-2 after 90 minutes and extra time. No detailed information was available on Lee Burns as Dartford FC lost 3-1 away to Halifax Town.

In the U21 English Premier League Division One, Adam Taggart was in the starting line-up and scored the winning goal as Fulham FC U21 came back to win 2-1 away to Manchester United U21. Brad Smith played a full match as Liverpool FC U21 won 2-1 away to Manchester City U21. In another match, Taggart played a full match and scored his side’s only goal as Fulham FC U21 lost 2-1 away to West Ham United U21. Meanwhile, in Division Two, Curtis Good was not in the squad for Newcastle United U21 as they played out a 1-1 draw with West Bromwich Albion U21.

In the quarterfinals of the U21 English Premier League Cup, Ryan Edwards played until the 115th minute as Reading FC U21 beat Huddersfield Town U21 1-0 in extra time after the match had finished scoreless after 90 minutes. Peter Skapetis was missing due to injury as Stoke City U21 lost 1-0 away to Derby County U21.

In the German Bundesliga, Mitch Langerak was an unused substitute as Borussia Dortmund moved off the foot of the table with a 3-0 win away to SC Freiburg. In an earlier match, Langerak was still missing due to Socceroos commitments as Dortmund lost 1-0 at home to FC Augsburg. Robbie Kruse was missing due to injury for both matches as Bayer Leverkusen first won 1-0 away to Hertha Berlin before losing 2-1 away to Werder Bremen.

In the 2. Bundesliga in Germany, Mathew Leckie came on in the 76th minute as league leading FC Ingolstadt won 1-0 away to Greuther Furth. Ben Halloran was an unused substitute for Fortuna Dusseldorf as they played to a 1-1 draw with Karlsruher SC.

In the German 3. Liga, Mustafa Amini played a full match as Borussia Dortmund II played out a goalless draw with SV Wehen Wiesbaden.

In the Eredivisie in the Netherlands, Tommy Oar played until the 77th minute while Michael Zullo was missing due to injury as FC Utrecht lost 3-1 away to giants PSV Eindhoven. Luke Wilkshire was also missing due to injury as Feyenoord won 2-1 at home to SC Cambuur. Both Trent Sainsbury and new signing Eli Babalj were not in the squad as PEC Zwolle were hammered 4-0 away to Heerenveen. In matches played earlier in the week, Oar played a full match while Zullo was again missing due to injury as Utrecht lost 1-0 away to Willem II. Wilkshire was again missing due to injury as Feyenoord lost 3-1 away to Heerenveen. Sainsbury was missing due to Socceroos commitments while Babalj was again not in the squad as Zwolle ran out 4-0 winners at home to FC Dordrecht.

In the Dutch Eerste Divisie, Kenneth Dougall played a full match while Alistair Quinn was an unused substitute as SC Telstar drew 3-3 away to Almere City FC. Andrew Marveggio was an unused substitute as Fortuna Sittard lost 3-0 at home to NEC Nijmegen. Luke Kairies was missing due to injury for FC Eindhoven as they lost 2-0 at home to Roda Kerkrade.

In the Hoofdklasse in the Netherlands, Jeremy Lynch came on in the 85th minute as FC Chabab won 2-1 away to HVV Hollandia.

In the Dutch Beloften Eredivisie, Marveggio played a full match for Jong Fortuna Sittard as they lost 2-1 away to Jong NEC/FC Oss.

In the Italian Serie A, Josh Brillante came on in the 87th minute as Empoli FC won 2-0 at home to AC Cesena.

In the Serie B in Italy, Mark Birighitti was an unused substitute for AS Varese as they drew 1-1 with FC Pro Vercelli.

In the Italian Lega Pro, Liam Graham was not in the squad as Aurora Pro Patria lost 2-0 away to Novara Calcio.

In the first leg of semi-final ties in the Italian Copa Primavera, Chris Ikonomidis was in the starting XI and set up the final goal of the game before being sent off in the 73rd minute as Lazio Youth won 2-0 at home to Juventus Youth.

In the Eerste Klasse in Belgium, Mat Ryan played a full match as Club Brugge KV lost 2-0 away to KV Kortrijk. James Troisi came on in the 69th minute as SV Zulte Waregem lost 3-2 at home to Lierse SK.

In the first leg of semi-final ties in the Beker van Belgie, Ryan was still missing due to Socceroos commitments as Club Brugge romped to a 5-1 home win over Cercle Brugge.

In the Primeira Liga in Portugal, Caleb Patterson-Sewell was an unused substitute as Gil Vicente won 2-1 away to Maritimo.

In the Swiss Super League, Oliver Bozanic played until the 77th minute as FC Luzern drew 1-1 with BSC Young Boys.

In the Turkish SuperLig, Aziz Behich was an unused substitute as Bursaspor won 3-1 at home to Genclerbirligi.

In the 2. Lig in Turkey, Emre Balci was in the starting eleven for Diyarbakir BBSK as they came back to draw 2-2 with Bandirmaspor.

In the Turkish 3. Lig, Kaan Korkmaz was not in the squad as Sakaryaspor won 1-0 at home to Bayburt Ozel Idare.

In the Turkish Kupasi, Behich came on in the 61st minute as Bursaspor won 3-0 at home to Fatih Karagumruk. Balci was not in the squad as Diyarbakir won 1-0 at home to Eskisehirspor.

In the Greek Superleague, Apostolis Giannou played a full 90 minutes in both match as Panionios GSS first drew 1-1 away to SKODA Xanthi before drawing 0-0 with AO Kerkyra. Theo Markelis was not in the squad for either match as Veria FC first lost 4-1 away to PAS Giannina before drawing 1-1 with Atromitos FC.

In the Prva Liga in Croatia, Tomislav Mrcela played a full match for NK Lokomotiva Zagreb as they lost 2-1 away to Dinamo Zagreb. Roko Strika was not in the squad as NK Zagreb won 1-0 at home to Slaven Belupo.

In the Scottish Premier League, Jackson Irvine played a full match while Cameron Burgess was not in the squad as bottom of the table Ross County lost 4-0 away to Aberdeen FC. 

In the round of 16 in the Scottish FA Cup, Ryan McGowan played a full match for Dundee United as they won 3-0 away to Stranraer FC. Tom Rogic was not in the squad for Celtic FC as they won 2-0 away to Dundee FC.

In the Arabian Gulf League in the United Arab Emirates, Brett Holman played until half-time as Al Nasr won 2-0 away to Sharjah SC. Earlier, Holman played a full match as Al Nasr played to a scoreless draw with Baniyas SC.

In the Qatar Stars League, Mark Bresciano played a full match for Al Gharafa as they lost 3-2 at home to Lekhwiya SC.

In the opening round of matches in the UFL Division One in the Philippines, Jesse Martindale played a full match for Green Archers United as they drew 1-1 with Global Manila. Richard Greer came on in the 83rd minute as Kaya FC won 4-0 at home to Philippine Army. Tahj Minniecon was missing due to injury for Loyola Meralco Sparks as they won 1-0 at home to Team Socceroo.

In the opening round of matches in the Malaysian Super League, Ndumba Makeche played a full match and scored his side’s second goal as Felda United drew 3-3 with Sarawak FA, for whom Ryan Griffiths was not in the squad. Jon McKain played a full match as Kelantan FA won 2-0 away to ATM FA, for whom Mario Karlovic played until the 65th minute. Robbie Cornthwaite also played a full match as Selangor FA lost 2-0 away to Terengganu FA.

In the Hong Kong Premier League, Jerrad Tyson played a full match for Sun Pegasus as they won 3-2 at home to Yuen Long. Daniel McBreen came on in the 54th minute while Evan Kostopoulos was not in the squad as South China AA played out a goalless draw with Tai Po FC.

In the I-League in India, Jerry Karpeh played a full match for Sporting Goa as they drew 0-0 with Mumbai FC. Milan Susak played until half-time for East Bengal as they lost 3-1 away to Salgaocar SC. Tolgay Ozbey also played until half-time as Dempo SC drew 1-1 with Royal Wahingdoh. Sean Rooney was missing due to injury as Bengaluru FC won 1-0 at home over Bharat FC.

In the opening qualification round of the AFC Champions League, James Meyer played until the 73rd minute as Yadanarbon FC eventually lost to Warriors FC 6-5 on penalties after the match had finished 0-0 after 90 minutes and 1-1 after extra time. Sean Rooney played until the 59th minute as Bengaluru FC suffered a 2-1 extra time loss to Darul Takzim after the match had finished 1-1 after 90 minutes.

In the final of the Copa Chivas friendly tournament, Gavin de Niese was in the starting eleven as CA River Plate lost 2-0 to Club Guadalajara. Earlier, in the semi-finals, de Niese played a full match as River won 2-0 against CA Boca Juniors. In the quarterfinals, de Niese again played a full match and scored as River won 3-1 over Club Atlas Plate.

Earlier in the group stage of the tournament, de Niese played another full match and scored the winning goal as River beat Boca Juniors 1-0, while he was not in the squad (rested) as River lost 2-0 to Seleccion de Mexico.

In further club friendlies this week, James Holland played a full match and scored as FK Austria Wien won 5-0 against Olimpija Ljubljana. Matt Smith played a full match for Bangkok Glass as they beat Bangkok United 4-2. Anthony Carter came on in the 70th minute as CFR Cluj won 1-0 against Zrinjski Mostar. In another match, Carter came on in the 65th minute and scored the final goal of the game as Cluj ran out 4-1 winners over NK Novigrad. Carter also came on in the 46th minute as Cluj won 3-1 over FK Novi Pazar.

Finally, lots of transfer news to round out the window this week, with the big story being Socceroo legend Tim Cahill announcing a move to Chinese Superleague side Shanghai Shenhua. Burnley goalkeeper Alex Cisak has joined League One side Leyton Orient on a month’s loan. Cisak, who had a 10 game stint on loan at York City earlier in the season, will link up with fellow Aussie Shane Lowry at Orient. Eli Babalj has secured a loan move from AZ Alkmaar to PEC Zwolle, where he will line up alongside Socceroo defender Trent Sainsbury. VVV-Venlo attacker Travis Cooper is coming home, having joined A-League side Newcastle Jets on loan for the remainder of the domestic season. Central Coast Mariners striker Mitchell Duke has also agreed an immediate move to J-League side Shimzu S Pulse.
