Aussies Abroad weekend wrap

OS AUSSIES: Following the success against Costa Rica, our Aussies Abroad returned to club football to build their case for a spot in the squad for Rio.

Mile Jedinak was involved in a rare victory for Crystal Palace, Tommy Oar impressed in Holland, while Mat Ryan kept a clean-sheet in Belgium. The news wasn’t as good for Dario Vidosic who picked up an injury in Switzerland, joining the likes of Mathew Leckie and Nikita Rukavytsya on the sidelines.

In the English Premier League, Mile Jedinak played a full game in midfield as Crystal Palace won their second game of the season with a 1-0 win over Hull City. The win saw Palace jump off the bottom of the table.

Elsewhere, Brad Jones was an unused substitute as Liverpool played out a thrilling 3-3 draw with rivals Everton, while Mark Schwarzer was an unused substitute as Chelsea beat West Ham United 3-0.

In the English Championship, Scott McDonald returned from injury, starting and playing 60 minutes as Millwall beat Barnsley 1-0. Shane Lowry was absent from the match-day squad.

Rhys Williams was an unused substitute as Middlesbrough lost 2-1 to Leeds United.

Elsewhere, Adam Federici was an unused substitute as Reading drew 0-0 with Blackburn Rovers, while Alex Cisak was an unused substitute as Burnley drew 1-1 with Nottingham Forest.

In League One, Neil Kilkenny made his starting debut for Preston North End in their 1-1 draw with Colchester United. Bailey Wright played a full game in defence for Preston.

James Meredith played a full game at left-back as Bradford City beat MK Dons 3-2. Meredith set up the winner on 84 minutes with a fine run down the left flank before delivering a low cross which was tapped home by Jason Kennedy at the front post.

Massimo Luongo played a full game in midfield as Swindon Town lost 3-1 to Leyton Orient.

James Wesolowski played a full game in midfield as Oldham Athletic beat Gillingham FC 1-0.

Elsewhere, Bradden Inman was absent from the match-day squad as Crewe Alexandra lost 2-1 to Port Vale.

In League Two, Ryan Williams starred with a goal and an assist in Oxford United’s 3-0 win over Morecambe. Williams, who won a foul which led to Oxford’s opener on 15 minutes, set up Sean Rigg on 24 minutes, racing onto David Hunt’s pass before cutting it back to Rigg who made no mistake from close range. Williams then got on the scoresheet himself with a cheeky chip over Barry Roche after Asa Hall intercepted a poor Morecambe pass.

Aaron Downes played a full game in defence as Torquay United lost 2-1 to Accrington Stanley. Downes provided the assist for the game’s opener with his long ball finding Paul McCallum who found the back of the net with a stunning long range volley.

Elsewhere, Shane Cansdell-Sherriff played a full game in defence as Burton Albion beat Bristol Rovers 1-0, while Ben McNamara was an unused substitute as Northampton Town lost 2-0 to Hartlepool United.

In the Scottish Premier League, Tom Rogic was an unused substitute as Celtic beat Aberdeen 3-1.

Elsewhere, Dylan McGowan played a full game in defence as Hearts drew 2-2 with Ross County, while Jackson Irvine was absent through suspension as Kilmarnock lost 2-0 to Motherwell.

In the German Bundesliga, Robbie Kruse was a 72nd minute substitute as Bayer Leverkusen beat Hertha Berlin 1-0. Kruse had a good chance to score just moments after coming on but a poor touch inside the box allowed Hertha ‘keeper Thomas Kraft to claim.

Elsewhere, Mitch Langerak was an unused substitute as Borussia Dortmund lost 3-0 to Bayern Munich.

In the German Second Division, Mathew Leckie was absent with a knee problem sustained on Socceroos duty as FSV Frankfurt beat FC Energie Cottbus 4-1. Nikita Rukavytsya missed the clash with an ankle injury.

Elsewhere, Ben Halloran was an unused substitute as Fortuna Dusseldorf lost 3-0 to Erzgebirge Aue.

In the German Third Division, Mustafa Amini played a full game in midfield as Borussia Dortmund II drew 1-1 with SV Wehen. Amini set-up Marvin Ducksch with a precise pass in the first half but the German striker fired wide of the target.

In the Dutch Eredivisie, Tommy Oar provided an assist as FC Utrecht beat ADO Den Haag 3-0. Oar, who started and played 60 minutes in the clash, brought out a fine save from ADO ‘keeper Gino Coutinho with a free-kick before delivering another set-piece on the stroke of half time which caused chaos in box, with Yoshiaki Takagi eventually tapping home. Adam Sarota was absent from the match-day squad.

Elsewhere, Jason Davidson started and played 59 minutes as Heracles lost 3-0 to Ajax, while Eli Babalj was absent with a groin problem as AZ Alkmaar drew 2-2 with Roda Kerkrade.

In the Italian Serie A, Carl Valeri was absent from the match-day squad as Sassuolo beat Atalanta 2-0. Valeri completed 80 minutes in a friendly against Romanian side Universitatea Cluj last weekend as he continues his recovery from a serious ankle injury.

In Belgium, Mat Ryan kept a clean sheet as Club Brugge beat KSC Lokeren 3-0. Ryan made a crucial one-on-one save on the half hour mark with the game delicately poised at 0-0.

In Austria, James Holland returned from suspension, playing a full game and providing an assist as Austria Wien hammered Wacker Innsbruck 5-0. Holland set up the opener on 20 minutes, with his lofted through ball finding Phillip Hosiner who thumped an impressive finish past Innsbruck ‘keeper Wolfgang Schober.

In Switzerland, Dario Vidosic started but was replaced after 38 minutes through injury as FC Sion lost 4-1 to FC Zurich.

Elsewhere, Oliver Bozanic was an unused substitute as FC Luzern beat St Gallen 3-1.

In Russia, Luke Wilkshire played a full game in defence as Dinamo Moscow lost 1-0 to Lokomotiv Moscow.

In the Greek Super League, Dean Bouzanis was an unused substitute as Aris lost 3-1 to PAOK.

In the Greek Third Division, Billy Konstantinidis fired home the winner as Panserraikos beat Makedonikos 1-0. Konstantinidis, who trialled with both Melbourne clubs in the A-League prior to this season, is the leading goal-scorer in the division.  

In Japan, Josh Kennedy played a full game in attack as Nagoya Grampus beat Kashiwa Reysol 3-2.

Elsewhere, Lucas Neill was an unused substitute as Omiya Ardija lost 1-0 to Shimizu S-Pulse.

In South Korea, Alex Wilkinson played a full game in defence as Jeonbuk Motors beat Incheon United 2-0.

Robbie Cornthwaite played a full game in defence as Chunnam Dragons beat Gangwon FC 1-0.

Elsewhere, Adrian Madaschi Luke Devere were absent from their respective sides as Devere’s Gyeongnam beat Madaschi’s Jeju United 1-0.  

In the UAE, Brett Holman played a full game as Al Nasr drew 0-0 with Sharjah FC.

Alex Brosque played a full game in attack as Al Ain lost 1-0 to Al Ahli.

Elsewhere, Billy Celeski played a full game as Al Shaab played out a thrilling 4-4 draw with Ajman Club, while Milan Susak was absent from the match-day squad as Al Wasl beat Dubai 3-1.

In the Qatar Stars League, Mark Bresciano was missing through suspension as Al Gharafa thumped struggling Umm Salal 6-2. Sasa Ognenovski also missed the clash through suspension.

In India, former Melbourne Victory defender Matt Foschini made his debut for Salgaocar in their 1-1 draw with Pune FC.
