Birighitti jets off to Germany

Newcastle Jets goalkeeper Mark Birighitti flew out to Germany on Sunday to meet with key representatives of Bundesliga giants Bayer Leverkusen – the club of injured Socceroo Robbie Kruse.

The 22-year-old left Australia after watching from the bench as the finals-chasing Jets’ thrashed Wellington Phoenix 5-0 at Hunter Stadium the day before.

His departure caps off a torrid time for the normally reliable custodian who was dropped in favour of Ben Kennedy for the round 24 encounter.

The Perth native was involved in a training ground bust-up with teammate Tyler Regan, and put in a calamitous performance in the Jets' recent 3-1 derby loss to Central Coast Mariners, amid claims he was distracted by a potential move to Germany.

Birighitti will return home on Saturday and link up with his teammates ahead of their crunch clash with Perth Glory at nib Stadium on Sunday, as Newcastle push to cement their place in the top six.
