Brosque bags late Hunter winner

Sydney FC had to wait until the 89th minute to secure a 1-0 win away to the Newcastle Jets on Saturday.

Sky Blues skipper Alex Brosque was the match-winner after getting his head on a late corner and beating Jets goalkeeper Ben Kennedy at his near post.

Kennedy had to be substituted on after Mark Birighitti suffered a shocking facial injury after a late boot from Shane Smeltz.

The goalkeeper's face was left bloodied with teeth dangling and will need plenty of work to fix the brutal mess.

The contest was headed for a scoreless stalemate, with Sydney unable to find the net after chances from Smeltz went wide and another from Brosque hit the post.

The win moves Sydney up to the top of the table momentarily on four points after two games.

More to follow.

Going to be another long year by the looks of that. Jets barely got the ball into Sydney's half. Game plan now lacks ambition as well as effectiveness.
