Futsalroos hit NZ for six to retain Cup

The Futsalroos retained the Trans-Tasman Cup with a dominant 6-1 win over New Zealand in Wellington on Thursday afternoon.

A brace from Fernando De Moraes and goals to Daniel Fogarty, Jarrod Basger, Wade Giovenali and Glenn Kelshaw helped the Aussies ease to a comfortable victory.

After a hard-fought 4-2 win in the opening match on Wednesday the Aussies proved their class with a fluid attacking performance in game two.

The Futsalroos started brightly and were rewarded with quick-fire goals to Fernando De Moraes and Daniel Fogarty mid-way through the opening stanza.

Jarrod Basger netted just before the break to give Rob Varela’s side a 3-0 lead heading into the interval.

Marvin Eakins pegged a goal back for New Zealand early in the second stanza to give the hosts a glimmer of hope.

But De Moraes’ second and a thumping strike from Wade Giovenali put the Futsalroos in control.

New Zealand’s Lucas Da Silva was shown a red card in the closing stages for a reckless tackle, leaving the hosts to finish the match with a man short.

Australia took advantage of the numerical advantage with Glenn Kelshaw scoring from close range to round a 6-1 victory.

Game three of the series will be played on Friday.
