The Futsalroos kicked off their Trans-Tasman Cup campaign with a 4-2 win over a fast-finishing New Zealand outfit in Wellington on Wednesday afternoon (AEST).
Goals from Marino Musumeci, Jordan Guerreiro, Fernando De Moraes and Jonathan Barrientos handed the Aussies a well-deserved win.
Australia dominated possession in the first stanza and were rewarded with Marino Musumeci netting the opener six minutes before the break.
The Aussies continued to press and doubled their advantage on the stroke of half-time with Jordan Guerreiro slotting home from close range to make it 2-0.
New Zealand started the second half with more purpose but were punished for some sloppy defending with Fernando De Moraes netting Australia’s third against the run of play.
The Kiwis pulled a goal back through Daniel Burns mid-way through the second stanza, with the attacker finishing off a well-worked move for the hosts.
Jonathan Barrientos sealed the win for Australia with less than 10 minutes remaining before New Zealand skipper Marun Eakins netted a consolation goal in the dying minutes.
The second match of the Trans-Tasman series will be played on Thursday before wrapping up with game three on Friday.
The final match of the Trans-Tasman Cup will also serve as the first match of the Commonwealth Futsal Cup which involves representative teams from New Zealand, Vanuatu, Malaysia and Australia.
The Futsalroos’ second match of the Commonwealth Futsal Cup will be against Vanuatu on Saturday before finishing against Malaysia the following day.
The matches will serve as preparation for the AFF Futsal Championship which will be held in Thailand from 8–18 October 2015.
