Gersbach has Sydney focus

Alex Gersbach

Sydney FC defender Alex Gersbach says talk in the media of a potential Socceroos call-up means nothing if he’s not producing consistent form for his club side Sydney FC.

The 18-year-old has started to play regularly for the Sky Blues but is putting talk of a national team call-up aside, and is only focusing on his club duties.

“Obviously it doesn’t mean anything because the media doesn’t pick the Socceroos team,” Gersbach said.

“But it’s good to have people talk about you like that in a positive way and I’ve just got to focus on my game and not worry about that stuff. If I’m good enough I’m good enough.

“I struggled to get game time earlier on in the season, I couldn’t wait to get back into the starting team but I’ve done that now I’m happy with that.

“I’ve just got to make sure I’m consistent and just play well week in week out so I can cement my spot.”

The explosive left back played just once during the first four rounds of the A-League after a season that was disrupted by Young Socceroos duties and the form of Sydney FC utility Rhyan Grant.

But, two weeks later Gersbach retained his spot in the Sky Blues starting line-up for the A-League tie against Melbourne Victory, and has never looked back.

“I guess when you come back into the starting team you’ve got to show a lot of commitment,” Gersbach said

“I’ve just tried to show a lot of energy and get up and down the wing and really try and defend well as well and I’m happy with how I’m going at the moment.

“But obviously there is room for improvement all the time and I’ll be working hard to improve and get better and better as the season goes on.”
