Glory go for Gallas

PERTH Glory are reportedly close to signing former French international William Gallas for the remainder of the A-League season.

The free agent has begun talks with Glory management about joining the club, according to the Football Central website.

With the recent loss of veteran defender Ljubo Milicevic, the former English Premier League star would provide much-needed depth and experience to a young Perth side, especially in defence, which is also currently without the injured Michael Thwaite.

Capped 84 times by France, Gallas left Tottenham Hotspur in the off-season after three seasons with the London outfit and has been without a club since.

The central defender spent 12 years in the UK, starring for Spurs, Arsenal and Chelsea, after joining the Blues from Marseille in 2001. He retired from international football two years ago.

Perth Glory coach Alistair Edwards was unavailable for comment this morning and the club has not so far responded to enquiries.

A graduate of France’s famous football academy Clairfontaine, Gallas made his professional debut at second division side SM Caen in 1995. He helped Caen secure promotion and moved to Olympic Marseille in 1997.

A multiple Premier League title-winner, Gallas is able to play as a centre back or at right back.

The 36-year old was a target of Melbourne Victory in August and has also been linked to several English Premier League clubs.
