The Matildas have achieved what their male counterparts could not with a 2-1 win against North Korea to secure qualification for the 2016 Rio Olympics.
With a draw or a win enough to book their passage to Rio, the Australians made it four wins from four in qualification ahead of their final game on Wednesday.
Striker Michelle Heyman gave Australia the advantage on 18 minutes after her brilliant curling shot was powered into the net.
Aussie keeper Lydia Williams pulled out a world-class save early in the second half to keep DPR Korea at bay.
And it should’ve been 2-0 with 20 minutes to go but Katrina Gorry was denied by an equally brilliant stop from the Korea keeper.
However on 77 minutes a superb move ended with K. Sugyong smashing a shot across Williams and into the net to equalise the match 1-1.
But the Aussies weren't to be denied.
Gorry, the 2014 Asian Player of the Year, found space in the box and her low shot went in off the post to make it 2-1 on 83 minutes.1 comment
