Griffin's team of the week
GK: Lawrence Thomas (Melbourne Victory)
Had a barrage of shots coming towards his goal on Saturday night against the Roar but the Victory custodian pulled out all stops bar an injury time winner. Certainly played well.
DL: Sam Gallaway (Newcastle Jets)
A solid shift from Gallaway, defended well and linked up with the centre-back paring of Josh Mitchell and Kew Jaliens. Also worked up well on the touch line with David Carney. Distribution was good and deservedly earns his selection this week.
DC: Josh Mitchell (Newcastle Jets)
Another versatile defender who has been frustrated with limited starts this season. However, he stood tall in the weekend’s romp over the Nix. Was very cool under pressure and won key duels and tackles.
DR: Jerome Polenz (Western Sydney Wanderers)
The German right-back played an impressive match against the Glory. Helped his side to a clean sheet and also added one to the scoresheet in an impressive display.
ML: David Carney (Newcastle Jets)
He’s back in Australia now and relishing playing on home turf. Had a great day out for the Jets and will enjoy getting up in the attacking third more often than he’s used to. Assisted in one goal and will be a key player for the Hunter outfit in their finals push.
MC: Zenon Caravella (Newcastle Jets)
Bossed the midfield with skipper Ruben Zadkovich against the Nix. Played in more than 50 per cent of matches this season and been sound. The 31-year-old year old assisted in one goal and worked hard. Won tackles, passed well and was an all-round team player worthy of his selection this week.
MC: Luke Brattan (Brisbane Roar)
Has been a model of consistency for the Roar since his arrival in the first team. If there’s one player you need to respond under pressure just outside the D it’s Brattan. His passing was also very good and work rate outstanding. A true match winner. Roar will be hoping he can replicate his regular season form in the finals series.
AM: Michael Carrusca (Adelaide United)
Fantastic performance from Carrusca in their 3-1 win over Sydney FC. Assisted in the one goal and always a major threat in the final third for his side. Has been one of the best players consistently week in week out for his side and hope to see him a big threat in the finals series.
MR: Fabio Ferreira (Adelaide United)
Another super performance from Ferreira on Friday night in front of a parochial home crowd. Scored a brilliant open goal, something he has excelled at all season. His passing and awareness makes him a deadly player in the final third. A great asset for Adelaide.
ST: Adam Taggart (Newcastle Jets)
Scored two goals and contributed to others in the 5-0 romp over the Wellington Phoenix, putting an end to the Kiwi club’s finals aspirations. Looking as a contender for player of the year.
ST: Emile Heskey (Newcastle Jets)
The tall Englishman capped off a great game by getting on the scorers sheet with a poachers type goal. Has had limited matches but always shows his class in the A-League with his presence in the box.
