Griffiths trials with MLS club

Central Coast Mariners defender Brent Griffiths is on trial with MLS club Sporting Kansas City.

Griffiths, who is contracted to the Mariners until the end of the 2014-2015 A-League season, has been given permission by the club to trial in America.

The 24-year old stopper played 60 minutes at centre back on January 31 in City’s pre-season 2-0 loss to the Portland Timbers.

FourFourTwo understands Griffiths is expected to play for the MLS outfit on Monday against FC Tuscon and return to the Mariners later this week.

Sporting Kansas City’s MLS season starts in March. The club finished fifth in the Eastern Conference in the 2014 campaign and was knocked out in the first round of the Cup playoffs by Socceroo Tim Cahill’s New York Red Bulls in October.

Griffiths was a junior with Blackburn Rovers and Perth Glory, and has made over 30 appearances for the Glory, Wellington Phoenix and the Mariners.

He injured his hamstring before the start of the current A-League season and has yet to feature in this campaign.
