After an impressive bid to make next year’s AFC U-16 Women’s Championship in China, the Mini Matildas fell at the final hurdle with a 1-0 loss to Korea Republic on Wednesday night.
The Aussies were leading Group C on goal difference going into the clash at the Hang Jebat Stadium in Malaysia and only needed a draw to book their place at the 2015 tournament.
After comprehensive wins over Vietnam (6-0) and Hong Kong (10-0) Ante Juric’s side took the game to their more fancied opponents, dominating the match at for long periods.
Neither side could find the back of the net until second-half substitute Im So-jeong broke the deadlock (and green and gold hearts).
Im capitalised on a superb cross to volley past Australia goal-keeper Jada Mathyssen-Whyma on 69 minutes.
The Mini Matildas pressed for an equaliser but were unable to find the crucial goal and had to settle for second spot in the group, with only the winner going through to next year’s finals in November.
