RHYS Williams hurt his foot in the 3-0 crushing of Canada in London but is hopeful for a speedy recovery.
The Middlesbrough captain starred at right back for the Socceroos and was one of Australia’s best in the friendly win until he was forced off with injury in the second half. Following the match he was wearing a protective boot.
“We’ll see what happens,” he said. “Hopefully it’s just a bit of bone bruising and nothing too serious. We’ll check it out tomorrow.”
A succession of injuries has curtailed Williams international career at times and he missed out on the 2010 World Cup due to a pelvic problem and many games in 2012 with ankle ligament damage.
This season he has been injury free and made 10 appearances for his club in the English Championship.
Williams filled in at the right side of defence against Canada and was a constant threat with some marauding runs. The 25-year old enjoyed his extended run in the position at Craven Cottage.
“It helps having the three centre midfielders because you have a bit more cover,” he said. “Viddy [Aurelio Vidmar] said to me just get tight and squeeze on, and I thought I did that.
"It was a good result for the team as well as to come away with a 3-0 victory. It’s a clean slate now with a new manager coming in so hopefully we can keep moving forward.”
Interim Socceroo boss Aurelio Vidmar described William’s performance against Canada as “excellent”.
Williams played as a centre back against France but is also able to play in midfield as well.
The 25 year-old appears most regularly for Middlesbrough as a holding midfielder and his versatility has meant he has featured in several different positions for the Socceroos since making his debut in 2009.
He added: “Playing right back sometimes can be difficult because I don’t play there for my club, but I never want to let the team down.
I don’t want to let the boss down, but it is difficult switching. But if we’re playing with some holding players like we did tonight with Mile [Jedinak] and Dutchy [James Holland] it obviously helps myself.
"I really enjoyed tonight and having Lucas [Neill] alongside me helps as well.”
