Joeys encouraged by USA draw

The Joeys came away with a well-earned 1-1 draw with the USA in France overnight as they continued to ramp up preparations for October’s FIFA U-17 World Cup in Chile.

Melbourne Victory’s Lucas Derrick unleased in the 64th minute to put the Australians ahead before their opponents equalised with just two minutes left on the clock.

The Joeys dominated large portions of the game and were unlucky not to grab all three points from the clash at the Stade de Beaublanc.

Tony Vidmar’s men carved out a number of opportunities in the high-tempo encounter but were missing the killer pass to penetrate the defence.

Capitalising on some solid build-up play, Derrick curled the ball into the far right corner of the net to give the Aussies a 1-0 lead.

But just when it looked like they were heading for the win, forward Joe Gallardo took advantage of a turnover at the back ito level the scores.

The Joeys continue their Lafarge Foot Avenir youth tournament campaign on Friday against Stade Rennais FC, before taking on France U-17 on Sunday.
