Keeper's mid-shootout masterstroke sees Sharks prevail
Viitakangas pulled off two huge saves as the Sharks prevailed 8-7 on penalties after scores were locked at 1-1 after 120 pulsating minutes.
The young gloveman stood tall to deny Stephen Hatzikostas’ spot-kick before diving down low to his right to keep out Michael Eager’s shot to seal a memorable win.
“I tried standing still for a few but then on that last one I thought ‘nah I have to dive, I have to move’,” Viitakangas told Fox Sports.
“I thought I wouldn’t save it if I’m not diving.
“I was just trying to focus…what a thrill that is. It’s great, it’s phenomenal.”
The Sharks went into the match as underdogs against the ex-NSL powerhouse but as they showed on their run to the quarter-finals last year, they always believe they can get the result.
“We’ve had a good run again this year to get here and to draw South Melbourne is huge for us,” Viitakangas.
“It’s almost like getting an A-League club, they are known throughout Australia as one of the biggest clubs.
“It’s such a thrill to get over them and have a win.”
