Kick-off in Townsville Football Cup

Sydney FC and Brisbane Roar were victorious in the inaugural Townsville Football Cup which kicked-off in earnest on Sunday.

Held at Townsville Sports Reserve, the Sky Blues out-classed local club Northern Fury 3-1, with Brisbane Roar demolishing A-League side Newcastle Jets 4-0.

Nikola Petkovic opened the scoring for Sydney FC in the first-half before Corey Gameiro continued his great pre-season form and made it 2-0 on 67 minutes.

The Fury pulled a goal back through a Kevin Fraser spot-kick just five minutes later, with Gameiro then grabbing second on 76 minutes to make it 3-1.

Sydney FC coach Graham Arnold was pleased with the performance despite it being a 'slow game' due to the north Queensland heat.

“It was a good workout, I think Fury played very well," said Arnold. "We were a bit sloppy at times but when you look at the conditions, it’s very warm and I had a lot of young boys on the field to give them a bit of experience of game time as well. In the end I was happy we got through without any injuries."

“It was a pretty slow game because of the heat and we are not used to that at the moment coming from Sydney.  It’s a great opportunity and a training camp situation. The most important thing this week is the physical aspect of our game and to return to Sydney with no injuries.”

Dimitri Petratos opened the scoring in the Roar vs Jets clash after just six minutes of play before Henrique converted a penalty to make it 2-0 going in to half-time.

Brisbane added two more goals in the second-half with substitutes Liam Miller and Shannon Brady getting on the score-sheet late in the contest.

The Roar will now face Fury on Wednesday, while Sydney FC come up against Newcastle, with the last games of the tournament taking place next Saturday.
