Luongo in Socceroos doubt

Socceroo Massimo Luongo may be unavailable for next month’s friendlies against Belgium and Saudi Arabia after sustaining a hamstring injury.

Sydney-born Luongo had to be replaced late in Swindon Town’s 2-2 draw with Gillingham in England’s League One on Tuesday.

"He has a sore hamstring so we are hoping that it's a tight hamstring rather than a pull," Swindon boss Mark Cooper told reporters after the game.

"We will assess that tomorrow (Wednesday).”

The Socceroos will eagerly await the results of the scans, with coach Ange Postecoglou set to announce the squad for next month’s friendlies at 11am AEST on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Australian-born England youth international Brad Smith, who is also at Swindon, returned early from injury in the draw with Gillingham and could be considered for Socceroos selection.

Smith, who is on loan at Swindon from Liverpool, returned to Anfield last week and had been expected to miss up to a month.

It was initially feared Smith had suffered a medial ligament injury, but scans showed it was only a small fracture in the knee.

Australia take on 2014 World Cup quarter-finalists Belgium in Liege on September 4 followed by Saudi Arabia in London four days later.
