Last season’s A-League Golden Boot winner Daniel McBreen netted a wonder goal in the Shanghai derby in the Chinese Super League on Saturday.
McBreen, who turned 37 on Wednesday, produced a brilliant left-foot volley from outside the box on 21 minutes as Shanghai Dongya drew 1-1 with city rivals Shanghai Shenhua.
The strike ended McBreen’s frustrating goalless run to the Chinese season, with his last goal coming when wearing Central Coast colours on January 25 against rivals Newcastle Jets.
The Shenhua defence headed away a hopeful punt forward, but the clearance only went as far as the unmarked McBreen just outside the box. He allowed the ball to bounce before unleashing a well-struck left-foot volley into the top right corner.
McBreen has only managed four goals in total in his time in China, having initially moved on loan in June, before penning a one-year deal at the end of January.
The veteran played a key part in Central Coast’s championship triumph last term, winning the Joe Marston Medal, but his latest goal came on the same day as the Mariners' title defence ended, losing 2-0 to Western Sydney Wanderers.
McBreen was one of several Mariners players from last year’s Grand Final side absent on Saturday, including Michael McGlinchey, Mat Ryan, Oliver Bozanic, Trent Sainsbury and Patrick Zwaanswijk.
