Melbourne Victory was shorn of some big names when it took to the pitch against Wellington Phoenix at AAMI Park on Monday night, but still managed to walk away with a 2-0 win. Griffin McMaster rates the players - who performed and who was found wanting.
NATHAN COE – 7.5
Had a quiet match. Was called upon later in the first half made a good one on one save.
MARK MILLIGAN – 8
Plays in the hole in his customary position controlled things well. Solid.
DYLAN MURNANE – 7.5
Pleasing not much got down his side all night.
SCOTT GALLOWAY – 7.5
Not a regular starter so has to prove his worth and did well will give Muscat some selection headache for next match.
LEIGH BROXHAM – 7.5
Not used to the centre back position but did his job well contributing to a clean sheet.
GUILHERME FINKLER – 8
The goal scorer off a free kick, didn’t touch a body, curled it beautifully on the bounce. BOG
FAHID BEN KHALFALLAH – 7.5
Offered well down the left, won the free kick that led to Victories first goal. Didn’t deserve to go off maybe its cause he’s over 30 and played 120 minutes last match.
CARL VALERI – 7.5
Settling in well at Victory. Solid shift
KOSTA BARBAROUSES – 7.5
Was giving problems to the Wellington defence, ever present. Had a fine game but FIFA rating for finishing would be low.
RASHID MAHAZI – 7
Will benefit with the experience playing alongside Valeri, played a little high up than him offering good service to Thompson, Barbarouses and Khahfallah.
ARCHIE THOMPSON – 7.5
Setup the second goal. His play that led to that was smart, his positioning peeling off and assist very good.
JORDAN BROWN – n/a
Back from young Socceroos’ duty. Came on 89th minute
JESS MAKAROUNAS – n/a
On 76th minute.
CONNOR PAIN – 7.5
On 67 minutes. Did his job came on changed the game. Got on the end of a Thompson pass. Credit Muscat for the change.
GLEN MOSS – 6
Hasn’t had a lot to do only the free kick and you couldn’t blame him for that. Got megged for the second goal and Pain didn’t have much angle to shoot from.
LOUIS FENTON – 7
Back into a right back position. Was under threat from Khalfallah pretty constant. Maybe not his most fluent position but wasn’t out of place, has good engine.
BEN SIGMUND – 6.5
Every match gives 100% although tonight a lot of play against and work was cutout.
ANDREW DURANTE – 7
Individually worked well however backline conceded two goals.
MANNY MUSCAT – 6
A lot of play went down his side and got exposed. He’s not a natural left back so Victory looked to exploit.
VINCE LIA – 6.5
Makes a start and needs to prove under Merrick. Not sure if he’s cementing that.
ALEX GORRIN – 6
Lasted a half. Reason for being subbed half performance half tactical.
ALBERT RIERA – 6
Cause of possession was doing a lot more chasing than passing. Definitely good enough for A-League though.
ROLY BONEVACIA – 6
Showed some glimpse without being real effective. Don’t think he should play high up, prefer deeper.
MICHAEL MCLINCHEY – 6
Was isolated and found things hard didn’t have the support when needed and couldn’t have that affect.
NATHAN BURNS – 5
Didn’t see much tonight which was disappointing. Call missing person’s unit.
TOM DOYLE – n/a
On 82nd minute.
ROY KRISHNA – n/a
Came on 76th minute.
JERREMY BROCKIE – 6
Came on at halftime. Didn’t get many opportunities. Only a shot right at the death.comments
