Merrick upbeat with Phoenix win

Wellington Phoenix coach Ernie Merrick has praised his chargers after their hard-fought 2-1 away win over the Central Coast Mariners on Saturday.

The Phoenix came from 1-0 down early in the first-half to secure a vital 2-1 away win against the Mariners.

Merrick was happy and smiling in the press conference as he said:

‘’It’s always tough to come to Gosford and claim three points. I was impressed with the win’’

Merrick was pleased with his new star man and former Mariner Michael Mcglinchey along with the rest of his squad.

‘’He (McGlinchey) was fantastic," Merrick said.

‘’We’ve got good depth. Lia came on and did a good job for us’’

The Wellington boss also had praised Nathan Burns who scored the winning goal against the Mariners.

‘’I’ve known Nathan since he was a youngster," he said. "He’s full of life’’

Merrick was able to convey his belief in getting as many points as he can away and at home.

‘’I’m a great believer in getting three points home and away. It was vital to us to get the three points today and we achieved that."

The 61-year-old also addressed a possible injury for Bonevacia, with the boss confirming that he had sustained a cork in his leg.
