Liverpool goalscorers James Milner and Adam Lallana were thankful for the testing clash against Brisbane Roar on Friday night.
Lallana cancelled out Dimitri Petratos' opener before Milner scored a 75th-minute winner in Liverpool's 2-1 victory at Suncorp Stadium.
Both midfielders welcomed the challenging encounter and said it came at an ideal time in the pre-season for Brendan Rodgers' men.
"It's always nice to get off the mark. Fitness always comes first in the pre-season," Milner told host broadcaster, Channel Nine.
"It was important we put in a performance. It was a good test for us tonight.
"They're a good team and they gave us exactly what we needed at this stage of the pre-season."
Milner struck via a deflected effort, while Lallana had equalised with a fine curling strike.
Lallana praised his team-mates for their display.
"They come out the blocks, they were very lively, it was a great test for us," he said of the Roar.
"It's only our second pre-season game, but I think the lads worked into it with the right mentality and considering we went a goal down, I think we put on quite a good performance."
An excellent performance by Roar goalkeeper Jamie Young kept John Aloisi's men in with a chance.
The shot-stopper was happy enough with his own display.
"I haven't seen the goal really but I felt it was a bit unfortunate with the deflection," Young said of the winner.
"It's always good to showcase what you're doing against a team as famous as Liverpool, it shows how well you can do."
Young added: "I think we can take a lot from it. The manager has come in in a short timeframe and has had to instill a few principles.
"I think we're a group that is willing to learn and I think when you have that, you have a chance."
