Australian midfielder Neil Kilkenny is set to resist the lure of returning home and is reportedly set to pen a new deal with League One club Preston North End.
The 28-year-old, who hasn’t played for the Socceroos in more than two years, is out of contract and had been linked with Perth Glory.
Perth Glory have since been busy in the transfer market, with the creative Mitch Nichols their latest addition to their midfield, following on from the signings of Youssouf Hersi and Ruben Zadkovich.
The Lancashire Evening Post is reporting that the England-born Brisbane-raised talent is now set to put pen to paper on a new deal at Deepdale in the next 24 hours.
Kilkenny joined Preston in November on loan from Bristol City, before penning a permanent deal in January and impressing in the back half of the season.
The Australian and the Lilywhites have been locked in talks over the past few weeks but appear set to agree to terms.
Meanwhile, Kilkenny’s club team-mate Bailey Wright told the Preston website how invaluable his experience at the World Cup had been so far, despite failing to get on the park.
“It’s helped me massively both on and off the pitch, just being around these kind of players, training with them day in and day out, and just being in their company," Wright told pnefc.net.
“You learn so much from how they act and train and everything so it’s been huge for me already.”
