Another stellar season for Melbourne Victory hitman Besart Berisha was not enough to secure a place in the preliminary 27-man Albania squad for Euro 2016.
Berisha, 30, was third in the A-League Golden Boot race, putting away 18 goals, but will have to watch from afar as the tiny nation debuts in its first major tournament.
Coach Giovanni de Biasi said he was solely responsible for the player selection and will bear the consequences, good or bad.
"I have sent a letter to the players explaining they are selected to be part of a team, based on their physical and psychological conditions and capacities to cope with such an activity," De Biasi said.
Surprise omission was prolific Skenderbeu striker Hamdi Salihi who netted 28 goals in the Albanian Super League.
The Eagles will warm-up for the tournament – where they face France, Romania and Switzerland in Group A – with friendlies against Qatar and Ukraine.
Berisha, who last played for Albania in 2009, indicated at the beginning of the year he was keen on a shot at Euro 2016.
Earlier this month, however, he canvassed the idea of becoming a naturalised Australian and making his stay Down Under permanent.
