Paartalu: We've done our homework on Edgeworth

Erik Paartalu says Melbourne City won’t be underestimating the Edgeworth Eagles when they meet in the FFA Cup’s round of 32.

The A-League side heads north to Newcastle on August 4 to play the NPL Northern NSW club at Magic Park.

Edgeworth booked their spot in the final 32 after defeating Adamstown Rosebud 3-0 and Paartalu predicts the Eagles will provide a good test.

“We have already started our homework on them and it’s a good chance to travel that early in the pre-season together and get a competitive game,” Paartalu told FourFourTwo.

“Any team is capable of beating anyone on their day. It’s the Cup. We won’t be taking it lightly.”

Edgeworth currently sit top of the NPL Northern NSW table with 10 wins and three losses.

But the Eagles will surrender some of the benefits of home advantage with the Cup clash to take place at Magic Park, the home ground of local rivals Broadmeadow Magic.

Paartalu is a big supporter of the FFA Cup.

“The Cup competition is great, I’m glad we finally have one,” the midfielder said.

“Last year it looked like fun and more engagement for the fans of all levels of the game – great for growth of the game and to involve the community more with the A-League.”

Melbourne City face sister club Manchester City this Saturday on the Gold Coast as part of their pre-season preparation.

“(It’s) a big challenge for us but one we are excited about,” Paartalu said.

City has been busy in the off-season signing of Corey Gameiro, Ivan Franjic, Michael Zullo, Steve Kuzmanovski and Northern Irishman Aaron Hughes. Josh Kennedy has retired while the likes of Tando Velaphi and Harry Novillo have penned new deals with the club.

Partaalu said the club’s pre-season is coming along nicely and is pleased to have his former Brisbane Roar teammate, Socceroo Franjic, at City.

“I’m looking forward to a big year,” the 29-year old said. “Corey is coming along in his rehab and Ivan has settled in well.

“Ivan and I are good mates. Since I left we have been in touch regularly and he’s really going to add a lot to the team this year.

“On and off the pitch he’s a guy that we really need in the squad.”
