Perth Glory sign Spanish winger as international marquee
The 33-year-old makes the switch to Australia’s topflight after spending the majority of his career in Spain's La Liga, most recently at Getafe CF.
Castro represented the ‘Azulones’ (the Blues) 129 times in a four-year spell at the club, scoring on 18 occasions including one against footballing powerhouse, Real Madrid.
Before that, Castro enjoyed stints at Sporting Gijon and Malaga after starting his career at Pontevedra.
Speaking exclusively to PGFC Online, Castro said the he was looking forward to his latest football chapter.
“I arrive in Australia still hungry for success and with hopes of challenging for trophies with my new team mates,” he said.
“The Hyundai A-League is a competition that is gaining respect in Europe and I am excited to be involved with Perth Glory for the coming season.”
Glory have suffered a loss of firepower in the wake of last season's salary cap scandal, including Irish international Andy Keogh and young gun Jamie Maclaren, and will be hoping the Spaniard hits the ground running.
Coach, Kenny Lowe, said Castro was an exciting acquisition for the club.
“Diego has played in the highest leagues of Spanish football for a long period of time playing nearly 300 games and scoring around 60 goals, so there is no doubting his quality,” he said.
“He gives us another option in attack, and really enhances the squad for the coming season.”
Club Owner, Tony Sage, said the arrival of Castro had the potential to thrill Glory fans.
“Diego loves to run at defenders and score goals," Sage said.
"I’ve seen vision of him playing and scoring against Real Madrid so to have him lining up in purple this season is very exciting for everyone.
Castro is the club's seventh off-season recruit following the addition of Antony Golec, Ante Covic, Hagi Gligor, Jerrad Tyson, Marc Warren and Alex Grant.
Glory have also signed experienced central midfielder, Gyorgy Sandor, for the next two years.
Goalkeeper Danny Vukovic, defender Scott Jamieson, midfielders Rostyn Griffiths and Danny De Silva have left as well as attackers Keogh, Maclaren and Youssouf Hersi.
Castro will arrive in Perth shortly to begin training with his new teammates.
