PFA name A-League Team of the Season

Melbourne Victory and Adelaide United have dominated the Professional Footballers of Australia (PFA) 2014-15 A-League Team of the Season.

The 16-man squad was voted on by PFA’s A-League members and announced on Wednesday.

Not surprisingly, Victory's Premiership and Championship-winning team were represented by five players, with Kevin Muscat selected as coach for steering the talent-packed side to a double dose of silverware.

The Reds were close behind with four players – goalkeeper Eugene Galekovic getting the nod for a record fifth time.

Galekovic said it was an honour to have been voted as the team captain.

“The recognition of your peers is the highest honour you can receive as a player and it’s a tremendous privilege to be named in the players’ team,” the Socceroo said.

“The standard on the pitch has never been higher and the quality of those selected in the team of the season highlights this.”

Sydney FC, who came second in the season and were defeated by Victory in the Grand Final, had just one player in the starting XI – Golden Boot Marc Janko.

Brisbane Roar, Central Coast Mariners, Newcastle Jets and Western Sydney Wanderers were not represented.

PFA Chief Executive Adam Vivian hailed those selected and said all were deserving of their recognition.

Vivian added: “The 2014/15 season reached new heights on the pitch and these players all played an integral part in this.”
