Player Ratings: Newcastle Jets v Wellington Phoenix

The Wellington Phoenix continued the Newcastle Jets' winless start to the season with a 3-1 win. James Hetherington rates each player's performance.

Ben Kennedy 6 - Had a gaff in 31st minute but was let off the hook. Nothing he could have done about any of the three goals.

Scott Neville 7 - Was an absolute animal for most of the game winning one-on-one contests, getting forward, tracking back and providing a millimeter perfect, last-ditch tackle to prevent Bonevacia a shot.

Kew Jaliens 6 - Contained the Phoenix to hovering outside the 18-yard-box in the first half, but like his partner suffered in the chaotic six minutes of goals.

Adrian Madaschi 6 - Was a defensive rock for most of the game winning all four of his tackles and cutting out threats early. He should have done better during their three-goal collapse though.

Sam Gallagher 6.5 - Passing was exceptional and the timing of his tackles prevented some early chances for the Phoenix. Lacked a bit going forward however.

Benjamin Kantarovski 5 - Apart from passing efficiency Kantarovski went missing.

Billy Celeski N/A - Subbed off in just the eighth minute with a groin problem.

Andrew Hoole 7 - Hoole was on fire, distributing some quality passes forward and dribbling well. Shame his inch perfect ball for Griffiths wasn't converted, could have been on highlight reels all season.

Joel Griffiths 6.5 - Unlucky not to score early after his second attempt went off the crossbar, but found himself in the right place for Newcastle's goal. Should have done better with that excellent ball from Hoole.

Edson Montano 5.5 - Looked good going forward but failed to ever pass the 18-yard-box with efficiency. Didn't manage a single shot and was subbed off in the 79th minute.

Jacob Pepper 6 - Was forced on early after Celeski's injury and had a solid performance.

Mitch Cooper N/A - Not enough time.

Jeronimo Neumann N/A - Seemed overly keen to impress, but really didn’t.

Glen Moss 6 - Distribution started sloppy, but did very well from a menacing corner in the 35th minute. Nothing he could do about the goal.

Manny Muscat 5.5 - Struggled a bit with the runs of Neville and made a rash challenge early in the second half.

Ben Sigmund 6.5 - Kept the same strength as Durante and provided good passes to keep possession.

Andrew Durante 6.5 - Rarely caught out of position and always ready to intercept threats. Had some great interceptions that could have escalated.

Tom Doyle 5 - A subpar performance from Doyle saw him replaced at half-time.

Roly Bonevacia 7.5 - Running forward Bonevacia gave Wellington the spark and gifted Burns a brilliant pass for the opening Phoenix goal. He followed it up shortly after with an assist for Krishna's bullet strike.

Albert Riera 6.5 - Lacked any upfront value to the game but did the underlying work passing around to his teammates. Finished with a huge 50 accurate passes.

Alex Rodriguez Gorrin 6 - He created some really good chances but struggled with his duels. Copped a nasty blow to the head and soldiered on until the 71st minute when he was subbed off.

Nathan Burns 8 - Was absolutely phenomenal. He made runs, created chances, linked up well with teammates and bagged a goal. And his finish, taking it around the keeper, was pure class.

Roy Krishna 7 - Showed a lot of positive early running but failed to capitalise on it until his goal. It was a rocket and will be viewed repeatedly. Hats off to him.

Michael McGlinchey 7 - Spoiled a few easy chances early but got the Phoenix's second goal to put them ahead.

Louis Fenton 6 - Had no trouble getting forward but his crossing left a lot to be desired.

Vince Lia N/A - No real impact.

Kenny Cunningham N/A - No time to influence.
