Player ratings: Sydney FC v Central Coast Mariners

Sydney FC eventually claimed a 4-2 win over the Central Coast Mariners on Saturday. Cronan Yu has all the player ratings, with the goalscorers particularly impressive.

SYDNEY FC

Vedran Janjetovic 7 – Pulled off a save in the opening 10 minutes when a slip-up from Aaron Calver saw Isaka Cernak through on goal. Denied Cernak and later Fabio Ferreira to keep Sydney in the match.

Aaron Calver 4 – Pressed high up the pitch throughout the match and found himself exposed on the right flank. Had a shocker and was duly replaced by Rhyan Grant.

Jacques Faty 5.5 – Looked in good shape at the back although was forced to clean up several mistakes. Couldn’t get much of a partnership working though as both he and Nikola Petkovic looked to be on different wavelengths.

Nikola Petkovic 5 – Was unimpressive at centre-back – a few loose touches and a lack of composure in defence saw the Mariners carve out a few chances.

Alex Gersbach 6.5 – Had some fine moments in attack with some dangerous crosses into the box. Was lazy tracking back though and was found out of position which allowed Ferreira to slot home the Mariners' second. Assisted Janko for his second.

Michael Tavares 7 – Industrious throughout and covered well in defence whilst the wing-backs pushed up. Played his part in midfield, distributed and combined well with teammates.

Terry Antonis 7 – Class as always and hardly put a foot wrong with a fine display – switched the play well and was an instigator of several counter-attacks.

Milos Dimitrijevic 7.5 – Provided the ball in from the corner from which Janko found the back of the net. And once again, was a stalwart in midfield.

Alex Brosque 7.5 – Was lively on the left flank, drifting inside and switching the play. Had some good touches and looked a constant threat.

Bernie Ibini 7.5 – Industrious as always and was positive with and without the ball. Looked to have picked up a serious injury but seemingly recovered.

Marc Janko 8 - Looked the goods and scored a brilliant header in the 14th minute. Made some good runs into space and had a good chance in the second half only for his shot from close range to be palmed away.

Subs:

Chris Naumoff 6 – Came on for Tavares and he didn’t have much to do after coming on.

Rhyan Grant 6.5 – Replaced an out-of-sorts Calver and while he was shaky in defence, scored a brilliant goal from 30 yards to equalise.

Shane Smeltz 7 – Came on for Brosque and scored a classy goal, beating two Mariners defenders before slotting home.

CENTRAL COAST MARINERS

Liam Reddy 6.5 – Made some crucial saves to keep the Mariners in the contest. In honesty, couldn’t do much for all three goals as slack defending made him vulnerable.

Storm Roux 6 – Was over-worked throughout the contest as Gersbach and Brosque proved too hot to handle. Nevertheless tried to make things happen in attack.

Jacob Poscoliero 5 – Looked solid in the first half although was kept on his heels in the second. Was rash at times and picked up a yellow card.

Zac Anderson 5.5 – Struck up a good partnership with Poscoliero but had his work cut out early on and late in the match as Sydney’s attack was in full swing.

Josh Rose 5.5 – Bernie Ibini made the most of Rose’s lack of confidence as the left-back looked out of sorts.

Nick Montgomery 6.5 – Had a mixed performance in midfield. At times, did well to link up with teammates but lost the ball cheaply as he was rushed in possession.

Liam Rose 6 – Didn’t have much of an impact on proceedings although had some good touches and looked to make things happen for the Mariners.

Isaka Cernak 7 – Was dangerous on the left flank and got the better of Calver on many occasions. His mesmerising run inside and subsequent lay-off set Ferreira up for his second.

Anthony Caceres 7.5 – Was composed throughout the match and provided the all-important assist for Ferreira’s leveller.

Nicholas Fitzgerald 6 – Was quiet up front although had a few opportunities off Ferreira’s crosses.

Fabio Ferreira 8 – Created problems down the right flank with some good runs into space. Score two classy goals which saw him net his sixth strike against the Sky Blues in six appearances.

Subs:

John Hutchinson 5 – Didn’t have much to do, but did pick up a yellow card.

Travis Major – N/A

Anthony Kalik – N/A
