Perth Glory proved they are the real deal, ending Sydney FC's unbeaten run and extending their lead at the top of the A-League ladder. Cronan Yu rates each player's performance at a rain-soaked Allianz Stadium on Thursday night.
Vedran Janjetovic 6.5 – Once again was in good form and did well to save Mitch Nichols’ shot early on. Also covered set pieces well. Was barely tested in the second half, but was helpless to stop Rostyn Griffiths' equaliser.
Pedj Bojic 6.5 – Did well to keep Danny De Silva and Scott Jamieson at bay in the first half. Composed in the second and was rarely threatened in the second.
Matthew Jurman 6 – Rusty and made a poor start to the game with a sloppy pass straight to De Silva. Slowly settled and did well to recover and block Andy Keogh’s shot in the 35th minute when the Irishman was through on goal. Found composure in the second half but poor marking led to a free header for Griffiths to score. Substituted in the 88th minute.
Nikola Petkovic 7 – Had a handful to deal with as Perth’s attackers tried to play behind him in the first half.
Alex Gersbach 6.5 – Was all over the place in the first half but found composure in the second, covering well in defence up against Richard Garcia and was dangerous in attack.
Terry Antonis 7 – Was perhaps the bright spot as he tried to spread the ball around the pitch against a compact Perth defence. More often than not, the first line of defence, pressing high up the pitch. Nearly gave Perth the lead with poor marking on Griffiths.
Milos Dimitrijevic 7- Made a good return to the Sydney line-up following his suspension and was instrumental in Sydney’s second half resurgence.
Rhyan Grant 6.5 – Started where he left off in the Sydney Derby and was composed throughout the match, slotting seamlessly into a midfield position. Substituted in the 74th minute.
Shane Smeltz 6.5 – Cut a peripheral figure throughout the first half as there was an evident lack of service for the Kiwi international. Improved in the second half and slotted home the penalty.
Bernie Ibini 7.5 – Lively on the left flank and combined well with Antonis. Popped up with a tame effort in the opening minutes. Much more of a threat in the second half, his selfless play creating numerous chances.
Alex Brosque 7.5 – Average in the first half but really came out firing in the second, occupying a wide position and slowly chipped away at Perth’s stubborn defence. Could’ve had a goal or two to his name.
Chris Naumoff 4 - Came on for Rhyan Grant in the 74th minute and gave away the penalty in the 87th minute which Keogh duly slotted home.
Nick Carle N/A – Came on for Jurman in the 88th minute as centre back.
Daniel Vukovic 7.5 – Was a spectactor for much of the first half bar Ibini’s two attempts on goal. Spectacularly denied Antonis a goal in the second half. Not much he could do about the Smeltz penalty but enjoyed a decent performance overall.
Joshua Risdon 6.5 – A fine decent performance with some crucial tackles and interceptions and attempted to keep Brosque at bay.
Dino Djulbic 7 – Was solid in the first half but found both himself and Michael Thwaite under intense pressure through the second half. Unlucky to be on the end of a horrible penalty call.
Michael Thwaite 7 – Enjoyed a great partnership with Djulbic and covered well throughout. Did well to absorb Sydney FC’s pressure in the second half.
Scott Jamieson 7 – Played an interchanging role with De Silva down the left, combined well with the youngster and had a miscued shot in the 5th minute across the face of the goal after finding space in the box. Otherwise, enjoyed a decent performance.
Rostyn Griffiths 7 – Flourished in his role as defensive midfield and was the focal point of transitions between defence and attack. Scored the equaliser off a beautiful Marinkovic free kick.
Richard Garcia 7.5 – The veteran caused major problems early on and had a great chance late in the second half – unmarked in the box but smashed it over the crossbar.
Mitch Nichols 7 – Was the linchpin of Perth’s attack in the first half alongside Marinkovic and looked to force the issue whenever Perth had the ball in the second.
Nebojsa Marinkovic 7 - Was a threat in the first half, linking well with the Keogh in the central striker role. Helped with counter-attacks in the second half and was crucial in Glory’s revival as he delivered the free-kick from which Perth equalised.
Daniel De Silva 6.5 – Dropped back deep in and helped Jamieson apply pressure on Ibini. Looked good in attack and substituted off in the 67th minute.
Andrew Keogh 7 – Looked dangerous from the offset, made decent runs into space, combined well with teammates and put pressure on Sydney FC’s attackers. Scored the winner off a tame penalty which fortunately rolled in after hitting Janjetovic on the foot.
Chris Harold 5 - Looked to surprise Sydney FC on the counter-attack whenever he was given the ball.
Ruben Zadkovich 5 – Replaced Garcia and had some decent touches.
Jamie Maclaren N/A: Came on for Keogh in stoppage time.comments
