Brisbane Roar coach Mike Mulvey refused to comment on a heated post-match argument between defender Shane Stefanutto and goalkeeper Jamie Young as a 3-1 loss to Melbourne City left the club at 0-4 with their A-League title defence in tatters.
Stefanutto could be seen in the centre of the pitch remonstrating angrily with Young in the wake of the loss, and the pair eventually had to be separated by teammate Jade North.
Mulvey would not be drawn on the incident, saying he had not seen it.
“I need to have a look at it and speak to the guys before I can comment on it,” he said.
“But you’ve got to understand that the guys will be frustrated, I thought we deserved something out of the game.”
The tension between the two players appears to be yet another sign that all is not right in the Roar dressing room, as the club attempts to rediscover the formula which led to three titles in the last four years.
Last week Liam Miller left the club after falling out with the manager over his non-selection, and the public disagreement between Stefanutto and Young could indicate further internal strife.
Things went from bad to worse for Brisbane in the first 10 minutes against City, as David Williams and Mate Dugandzic pounced on defensive errors to put the visitors two goals up.
Mulvey said the whole team was to blame for the horror start.
“What killed us were our defensive lapses as a team,” he said.
“We did not defend well as a team.
“The first 10 or 15 minutes it’s just poor defending.
“We defend together, we attack together, and we didn’t do it well enough collectively tonight.
“So that cost us, and I think the response in the second half was excellent.”
The various combinations Mulvey has tried in order to replace the key departed players Ivan Franjic and Besart Berisha have failed to provide the team with a win, and the manager said he would go back to the drawing board this week.
“We need to find some answers,” he said.
“We need to have a good think, we need to have a bit of a rethink as well because clearly what we’re doing is not working.”comments
