Scotland too strong for Matildas

The Westfield Matildas have lost 4-2 to Scotland overnight after again going down 3-0 in the opening 30 minutes in their final group match of the Cyprus Women's Cup in Larnaca.

Just as they did in the last match against France, the Matildas had a mountain to climb after their faltering start to get amongst the points. Substitute Michelle Heyman scored twice to reduce the deficit, but the Matildas were unable to bridge the gap enough to improve their standing in Group B.
Going into the match, Matildas coach Hesterine de Reus gave debuts to Newcastle Jets teammates Hannah Brewer and Gema Simon.
Scotland started the stronger of the teams and immediately applied the pressure with Matildas goalkeeper Brianna Davey called into action early, having to make five saves in the opening 10 minutes, including a long range shot from Rachel Corsie.
Lisa Evans gave Scotland the lead in the 12th minute slotting past Davey after being set-up by Hayley Lauder.
Jane Ross extended the Scots lead in the 28th minute and then added the third on the half hour mark.
The Matildas' best chance of the half came in the 41st minute when Kim Carroll headed over the bar from a free kick.
De Reus made two changes at half-time with Laura Alleway and Katrina Gorry replacing Emma Checker and  Chloe Logarzo respectively.
Eight minutes later Leena Khamis was replaced by Michelle Heyman who had an impact after being on the park for 10 minutes scoring from a tight angle following some good build up play.
Scotland restored their three goal advantage in the 70th minute when Jane Ross completed her hat-trick.
Heyman pulled another goal back four minutes later after receiving a pass from Matildas captain Kathryn Gill, and then sent a sweet 20 yard strike past Gemma Fay in the Scotland goal to finish the match at 4-2, with the Matildas going down to 10 after Kim Carroll was sent off in injury time for her second yellow offence.
In the other Group B match, France defeated the Netherland 3-0 to edge Scotland on goal difference to top the table and book a berth in the final against England. The Matildas will now face Italy at Tasos Marko, Paralimni in the 7th/8th play-off at 2:00pm Wednesday 12 March ( 11pm AEDT Wednesday 13 March).
