Snubbed Sasa signs off for Socceroos

Veteran defender Sasa Ognenovski has called timed on his international career after failing to make coach Ange Postecoglou’s provisional 30-man World Cup squad.

The 2010 Asian Player of the Year returned to the A-League with Sydney FC in the hopes of putting himself in the frame for Brazil.

But on Wednesday the 35-year-old conceded he had played his last game for the green and gold, claiming Postecoglou was not enamoured of his style.

“I just think he doesn’t rate my style, I can’t see any other reason,’’ Ognenovski told the Herald Sun.

“I’ve never had any dealings with him to say there’s a clash of character. To miss out like that is a bitter pill to swallow.

“Originally when Ange came in, he spoke a lot about form and fitness regardless of age and I thought my form at Sydney FC was pretty good, so that’s disappointing.

“I missed out on 2010 because I wasn’t experienced enough and now I’m too old.”

He added: “I won’t come out and announce any glamorous retirement.

“But I’m not going to say I’m fighting for an Asian Cup or anything like that. I won’t be putting my hand up again.’’

Ognenovski had to wait a long time for his chance.

After being consistently overlooked  by former Socceroos coach Pim Verbeek the uncompromising centre-back chalked up 22 caps under Holger Osieck. During that period he formed a solid partnership with skipper Lucas Neill who was also bumped out of the side for a more youthful line-up.

But Ognenovski said Postecoglou was taking a high-risk gamble by naming an inexperienced defence.

“I believe the squad needed more experience,’’ Ognenovski said.

“We’re taking boys to the World Cup off the back of one or two caps and not in a real pressure-cooker situation.

“He’s throwing them in the deep end against three of the top 15 sides in the world.

“They could all stand up and have an amazing tournament. At the same time if it doesn’t go to script, it could have a long-lasting effect on the younger guys.

“He’s willing to take that risk and you’ve got to congratulate him for that.’’
