So long Sasa: Injury kills Ognenovski's season
The former Socceroo sustained a hip complaint against Melbourne Victory in round six of the season which was subsequently diagnosed as an injury to the lateral cutaneous nerve of the thigh.
The injury carries an extended recovery period that will see Ognenovski play no further part in Sydney FC’s current campaign.
It also raises questions about the future playing career of Ognenovski who turns 36 in April.
He is a major loss for the fifth-placed Sky Blues but one they were expecting after struggling to see any improvement in the experienced centre back's condition.
The harboursiders have been slugged with a series of high-profile absences which will force coach Graham Arnold to dip into the January transfer market.
Attackers Corey Gameiro and Ali Abbas, as well as Nick Carle, are also out for the season with knee injuries.
Arnold rued the loss of his imposising defender on Tuesday, only recently indicating that his team was getting out-muscled on the park
“It’s disappointing to lose a player of Sasa’s calibre for the rest of the season," he said.
I will be speaking with Chief Executive Officer Tony Pignata to discuss suitable replacements.”
Sydney FC are next in action on Boxing Day at home to Adelaide United (kick off 7:45pm).
