Swansea add Aussie youngsters

English Premier League club Swansea City have announced the signing of Australian-born striker James Demetriou on a two-year deal.

Demetriou joins the Swansea U21 squad after his contract at Championship club Nottingham Forest expired.

The 19-year-old made the move to England from Sydney Olympic last year and has since represented Cyprus at U21 international level.

"It's great to be here," Demetriou told the Swansea website. "It has taken a long time to get sorted but it feels good and I just want to get my head down now and focus on the season ahead.

"Swansea are a Premier League club, they play a great brand of football and they are a team that gives young players an opportunity.

"My short-term aim is get game time and try to score as many goals as I can, but long-term I want to break into the first-team here and impress the manager."

Swansea also announced the signing of Sydney-born midfielder Giancarlo Gallifuoco on a one-year deal.

The 20-year-old joins from Tottenham where he spent the last three years at White Hart Lane.

"I'm very excited," he said. "It's the perfect club for me to take the next step in my career and I can't wait to get started.

"I had a brief chat with Garry Monk and he said that there are opportunities at this club if I work hard and that's what I intend to do.

"I was excited when I learned of the club's interest and it's a Premier League club that plays brilliant football and I'm delighted to be here."

Giancarlo's arrival in SA1 reunites him with fellow new recruit James Demetriou, who he played with at Under-11 level in Sydney.
