Sydney FC have re-signed promising young duo Aaron Calver and George Blackwood for a further two years.
Calver, 19, enjoyed an extended run in coach Graham Arnold’s squad this season, while Blackwood made his A-League debut in round one.
“I’m really glad to be signing on,” said Calver who has made 17 A-League appearances in defence since making his Sky Blues debut as a 16-year-old in 2012.
“I’m excited for the year to come especially after how the boys have gone this year.
“It feels great that Arnie has shown this faith in me and that he’s able to trust me and use me wherever he needs. I just want to play regularly now and impress as much as I can.”
Blackwood has played a key role in the front line of Sydney FC’s National Youth League squad, clinching the golden boot with 10 goals.
Now the 18-year-old APIA Leichhardt product has set his sights on progressing as a footballer under Arnold.
“It’s great to be here for the next two years,” he said. “I think it’s the perfect place for me, great coaches and great people to be around here so I’m really excited.
“It means a lot, and helps your confidence as a player when you’re out on the pitch knowing the coaching staff have that faith in you.
“I just want to get as much game time with the first team and just keep working hard for the team and doing what I can with the team to become better.”
Arnold praised the young duo saying he hopes to see them take to their game to the next level over the coming seasons.
“Aaron and George have impressed me immensely this season and I believe the pair are both very deserving of these new deals,” Arnold said.
“I’ve always enjoyed developing youth players, I’d rather develop what we have here than go out and buy a new player where possible.
“It’s our ambition to have the best youth set up and academy in Australia and by bringing in locally based players like Aaron and George we are fulfilling their aspirations and hope to do the same with many young Sydney footballers in the future.”comments
