Toni linked to Adelaide

Adelaide United have been linked with Italy’s 2006 World Cup-winning striker Luca Toni.

The Adelaide Advertiser has reported Toni, who plays for Verona in Serie A, has been offered to the Reds for next season.

A proven goalscorer at the highest level, the former Italy international’s signature would be a huge coup for Adelaide.

At 193cm, the 37-year-old would be an imposing figure in the A-League and would surely make the Reds a serious title contender for next season.

He has scored 19 goals in 36 matches for Verona in the Serie A this season.

If the Reds were to secure Toni, it would mean Argentine playmaker Marcelo Carrusca would lose his marquee status and would have to fit under the salary cap.

The Advertiser believes Toni would command up to $1million a season.

Meanwhile, the Reds are set to take on Manchester City in a closed-doors friendly in July ahead of the Premier League giants’ appearance at the International Champions Cup at the MCG.

Club chairman Greg Griffin revealed the match in a speech at the club’s red carpet awards night at the Adelaide Zoo’s Sanctuary on Friday night.

Griffin said the clash was organised after City’s executive director Simon Pearce made contact with the club knowing the Reds were also playing Liverpool in a sold-out friendly at Adelaide Oval on July 20.
