Victory ambassador's Australia day award

Melbourne Victory's Australia day celebrations can begin early, with community ambassador Gary Lee being named New Australian of the Year for 2016 by the Australia Day Council.

Gary is part of Melbourne Victory's Community Ambassador program, which focuses on engaging with diverse multicultural communities through football.

"People who have worked with him describe him as the glue between communities, and bringing together communities that don't traditionally meet – such as between refugees and international students,” said Wesa Chau, Chair of the New Australian of the Year selection panel.

“Gary is not your typical advocate, he is incredibly creative and an expert in social media. Just by looking at the list of events that Gary is involved in, you really start to wonder whether he has time to sleep."

The New Australian of the Year is an award that recognises the contributions of migrants and refugees in Australia.

The award is open any new Australian who excels in any field, including academia, business, sports and community.
