Vidmar names Olyroo squad for four-nation friendly

Olyroos coach Aurelio Vidmar has named a 22-man squad to play Brazil, China PR and Korea Republic’s U-22 teams in a four-nation international friendly next week.

The squad, made up of 12 A-League and 10 overseas-based players, will take part in the tournament in Wuhan China from November 14-18.

It will be the first time the Olyroos have assembled since the AFC U-22 Championship in January where they were knocked out of the quarter-finals by Saudi Arabia.

Vidmar said he is keen to begin preparations for the next AFC U-22 Championship campaign which will double as the qualification tournament for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

“When the opportunity came up to play three quality matches at this stage of our preparations we had no hesitation in accepting,” Vidmar said.

“It has been a while since we have been together as group and I will be using this camp to assess how everyone is progressing.”

“This will also be the first time that a number of players have joined the group and it will be interesting to see how they fit into the playing style.

“We want to get positives result from this tournament, but the overall goal is for all players to get used to the playing style that we want to take into the qualification campaign.”

The Olyroos will face Brazil in their opening match on Friday November 14, followed by China PR on Sunday November 16 and then Korea Republic on Tuesday November 18.

All matches will be played at the Wuhan Sports Centre.
