Wanderers face Guangzhou Evergrande in ACL rematch

Asian Champions Western Sydney Wanderers face a rematch with Chinese Super League powerhouse Guangzhou Evergrande in the 2015 AFC Champions League.

Tony Popovic’s men stunned many pundits when they knocked Marcelo Lippi’s cashed-up side out of the tournament in the quarter-final, memorable for an ugly side-line flare-up when the incensed Italian took to the pitch.

The rematch was revealed during Thursday night’s ACL draw at AFC headquarters in Kuala Lumpur.

Wanderers in Group H will also face J.League side Kashima Antlers and the winner of play-off 1 (East).

A-League defending champions Brisbane Roar were drawn in Group G with K-League outfit Suwon Bluewings, the J.League’s Urawa Reds and the winner of play-off 4 (East).

Meanwhile the Central Coast Mariners will face China’s Guangzhou R&F, Myanmar’s Yadanarbon, or Singapore’s Warriors FC in a one-off, high-stakes qualification match at home on February 17.

If the Mariners prevail the club will compete in Group F alongside 2014 Japanese Champions Gamba Osaka, the K-League’s Seongnam FC – who the Mariners faced in the 2012 version of the competition – plus Thai outfit Buriram United.
